One item that caught our eye was the Superman vs. The Robot lunch box up for auction – last year at around this time, a mint condition lunchbox sold for $11,865. This one doesn’t appear to be close to that condition, but this lunch box has been called the “Holy Grail.”

PAIR OF MONSTER THREE-DAY SALES, PLUS A ONE-DAY ESTATE AUCTION, WILL FILL THE PHILIP WEISS AUCTIONS CALENDAR FOR SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER

Superman Lunchbox, Krazy Cat and rare Dickson pistolsThe auctions – slated for Sept. 15, Sept. 23-25 and Oct. 21-23 – will be held in Oceanside, N.Y.

(OCEANSIDE, N.Y.) – Most auction houses can brag about having maybe one three-day sale per year, if that, but Philip Weiss Auctions has two such events planned for back-to-back months — on Sept. 23-25 and Oct. 21-23. A one-day estate sale is also slated, for Sept. 15. All of the auctions will be held in the Philip Weiss Auctions showroom, at #1 Neil Court in Oceanside.

Just a few of the many noteworthy lots that will change hands this fall are an important family archive of Titanic memorabilia, from a survivor’s family; 1930s-era original comic art (to include Herriman Krazy Kat and Foster Prince Valiant examples; a nice Disney Snow White cel on a master background; and a pair of rare Dickson pistols from the Charles Gordon collection.

The Saturday, Sept. 15 estate sale, while fitting into just one day, shouldn’t be dismissed. Featured will be Part 1 of a 700-piece Royal Doulton figurine collection, a nice grouping of Oriental vases, a monumental late 19th century crystal vase and other fine consignments, drawn from prominent local estates and collections. The auction will get underway at 2 p.m. (EDT).

The first of the three-day mega-sales will kick off on Friday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m., with a session dedicated to Hollywood and rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia. Offered will be a large collection of original early rock ‘n’ roll master recording tapes of such stars as Chuck Berry, Vanilla Fudge, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, and a rare early studio demo recording of Billy Joel.

Also featured that day will be Hollywood photos and other material from the Lester Glassner estate, plus additional Hollywood items from other estates (posters, negatives, etc.). Then, on Saturday, Sept. 24, a second session will begin at 10 a.m., this one packed with toys, toy trains, dolls, door stops and Part 1 of a huge, single-owner pressed steel truck collection.

Also offered will be Part 1 of a single-owner Courtenay and Britains collection (with over 100 Courtenay and Greenhill figures), a standard gauge train collection (Lionel, American Flyer, etc.), die-cast Dinky toys, cast-iron door stoppers, vintage lunchboxes (including Superman vs. the Robot) and dolls and bears (to include a rare Knickerbocker ‘Kewtee Bear’ with original tag).

The final day of the sale (Sunday, Sept. 25, also with a 10 a.m. start time) will see comics, comic art, Disney items and animation take center stage. Highlighting the day will be the ‘Adirondack Collection’ of comic art, plus a fabulous selection of 1930s-era original comic art (to include Herriman Krazy Kat, Foster Prince Valiant, and other early Sunday and daily pages).

The Sept. 25 session will also feature three wonderful Charles Schulz original Peanuts comic strips (including an early 1952 daily), a great run of high-grade King Comics (from #1 on up), Part 2 of the Joel Cohen Disney Collection, a gorgeous Snow White cel on a master background, and an ‘Operator 5’ premium ring in the original red box (one of only two known).

The October three-day sale will begin on Friday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m. in the afternoon, with a session loaded with transportation, aviation, maritime, militaria and posters. Featured will be over 100 World War I and II helmets and goggles, a unique Mexican/Civil War trunk belonging to Maj. William Schoonover (176th PA Infantry), identified daguerreotypes, books and photos.

The hit of the session, though, promises to be an important family archive of Titanic memorabilia, directly from a family member of John & Nelle Pillsbury Snyder, who were rescued when the Titanic sank. Archive includes a letter on Titanic stationary dated April 10, 1912, photos of the Snyders, another letter dated April 18th that tells of the confusion from news sources and the White Star Line at the time of the sinking, a group of original photos taken from the Carpathia, newspaper clippings, family mementos, collectibles and more.

Also offered will be a rare World War II German SS Totenkopf H. Himmler honor ring, engraved and dated (Sept. 11, 1941), with a certificate of authenticity; very important percussion pistols and shotguns (including a pair of Dickson pistols from the Charles Gordon collection); maritime and nautical material from the Bushnell estate; and World War I/World War II posters.

Sandwich day – Saturday, Oct. 22, starting at 10 a.m. – will feature sports items, stamps and coins, rare books, autographs and maps. Highlights will include a trove of 1930s and ‘40s baseball and non-sports cards, jockey Willie Shoemaker’s first signed contract as an apprentice, a Pittsburgh Pirates signed team baseball (with a nice Roberto Clemente signature), a baseball signed in 1934 by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, a contemporary Yankee Stadium painting by William Feldman, a 1948 Olympic torch and more.

Stamps will include Part 5 of the Great Lakes Collection, plus many additions from other prominent estates. Coins will feature a single-owner estate collection of ancient gold and silver coins. Books will include a rare copy of Treasure Island, with original drawing by N.C. Wyeth.

The final day of the auction –Sunday, Oct. 23, also with a 10 a.m. start time – will have toys, toy trains, toy soldiers and pressed steel. Offered will be Part 2 of a single-owner Courtenay and Greenhill collection, Britains, pressed steel trucks, toy trains and other desirable collectibles.

In the past, lighters were available everywhere from dime stores to fine jewelry stores in various shapes and sizes and finishes that included gold, leather, patterned china and enameled surfaces.

Modern lighters were made possible by the patenting of Ferrocerium in 1903 by Carl Auer von Welsbach.

Ronson Lighters
Ronson released the Pist-O-Liter in 1910 and 1913 marked the company development of it’s first lighter, the “Wonderlite”, which was a permanent match style of lighter.

Zippo Lighters
George G. Blaisdell founded the Zippo company in 1932 after seeing a friend using an Austrian product to light his cigarette. Blaisdell acquired the American distribution rights and redesigned it above a garage in Bradford, Pennsylvania in late 1932. Manufacturing of the first Zippo lighter began in 1933.

According to Andrew Turner, writing for AuctionBytes, “The most sought after are the early models with the metallique advertising designs. Town & Country and leather wrap models are quite desirable as well. Mint condition and/or in the original boxes increases value greatly.”

As of this post date, looking back at the past 14 days of sales in the Collectibles > Tobacciana > Lighters category the most popular listed branded lighters are Zippos, followed by Ronson, Colibri, Camel, Dupont, Scripto, Dunhill and Evans respectively. The highest prices paid were for a Dunhill 18k clock lighter which sold for $3,850.00, a 1950′s Dunhill Aquarium Perspex / Lucite Table Lighter which sold for $2,135.00 and a LE 1993 St Dupont Art Nouveau Ligne Line 2 lighter which sold for $1,495.95.

The sell-through rate in the Zippo category was 63.1% with an average selling price of $21.30. The highest priced selling items were a Marlboro Bull Longhorn Brass Brushed Zippo Lighter which sold for $860.00, a Leather Crafted Brown Reptile Vintage Zippo Lighter NIB which sold for $810.20 and a 1930′s Zippo National Electronics lighter which sold for $674.99.

In the late 1700′s the British needed a way to keep their tasty morsels fresh, so they invented the biscuit jar. It took about 125 years for this idea make it’s way across the Atlantic to America, but when it did it was an instant hit. We restyled it, renamed it and made it our own. We call it the “cookie jar”.

By the 1920′s the cookie jar was a staple in homes throughout America. The early jars were made of glass with either a matching glass top or a graduating screw on lid. Many of the glass patterns of the Depression era were available in cookie jar form and are a nice addition to an advanced collection. But, the purist will always base the bulk his collection on cookie jars made by the American pottery companies.

The first ceramic cookie jar made in the U.S is commonly accredited to the Brush Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. It was a plain green cylinder shaped jar that simply said “Cookies” on the front. Collectors watch for early Brush cookie jars. They are easily identified by the BRUSH U.S.A. mark that almost always will appear on the bottom. But please beware if you are a novice to collecting in this field. Brush jars, especially the very early ones, have been reproduced in large quantities. This is where you would be wise to invest in an identification guide and do your homework before you shop.

Following Brush’s lead, most of the major American pottery companies were offering a line of ceramic jars by the mid-1930′s. Competition was fierce and design exploration became more innovative with the introduction of cookie jars in figural shapes, as well as in the shape of vegetables, fruit, and animals. Famous figures from children’s stories, such as the Hull “Little Red Riding Hood” were very successful and remain top priority with collectors today.

McCoy cookie jars, produced in Roseville, Ohio, from 1930-1987 are another favorite with collectors. Their very first jar, A black “Mammy” in a long white work dress is a valuable addition to any collection, as are the first issue fruit and vegetable shapes. Again be advised that these jars are mass-reproduced. Very early pieces are marked with a number inside a shield. After 1938 the jars were marked with the embossed McCoy name. In 1967 McCoy sold out to Mount Clemens Pottery Company and it changed owners again when purchases by the Lancaster Colony Corporation in 1874. If you intend to be a serious collector it would be wise to study the McCoy marks as the marks changed after 1967 and the jars since that date are of lesser value.

Other late 1930′s potters of note include: American Bisque, of Williamstown, West Virginia, known for their cartoon character cookie jars marked U.S.A; Red Wind of Minnesota best known for their 1940′s apple, grape, pineapple, pear, bananas and grapes cookie jars designed by Belle Kogan, and their 1941 series of “Thou Shall Not Steal” figural jars; Metlox, one of the leading California potters, is best known for their late 1960′s and early 1970′s animal series. Of special note are the the “Katy-Cat” and the “Year of the Dinosaur” series; and the Shawnee Pottery company of Ohio, noted for their Winnie, Smiley, and Muggsie jars. When looking for these it is important to remember that Shawnee was purchase by the Terrance Ceramics Company in 1961. Although Terrance jars are of similar quality and will look very much like the popular cookie jars made by the Shawnee factory, collectors have little interest in the jars that are not authentic Shawnee.

The 1980′s and early 1990′s saw tremendous returns for some private cookie jar collections. One of the most famous liquidations came at auction when the estate of pop icon Andy Warhol was sold. Warhol had been an avid collector of cookie jars for most of his adult life. After his death, his collection of 175 jars sold for over $250,000. Friends confided to the auction handling the estate that he was an incredible “tight wad”, purchasing most of the jars at flea markets and having less that $500 invested in the entire collection.

While most collectibles go in and out of popularity with the collecting public, the cookie jar has remained a constant favorite. There is just something about a cookie jar that is more than a piece of pottery. Perhaps Andy Warhol said it best when asked why, of all things available to him, he collected cookie jars. Warhol replied. “because they are time pieces”. And so they are. Until next time… Linda.

“In 1951, Cleveland, Ohio disc jockey Alan Freed began broadcasting rhythm, blues, and country music for a multi-racial audience. Freed, familiar with the music of earlier decades, used the phrase “rock and roll” to describe the music he aired over station WJW (850 AM); its use is also credited to Freed’s sponsor, record store owner Leo Mintz, who encouraged Freed to play the music on the radio. Based on his success in Cleveland, Freed was soon hired by New York station WINS; upon arrival in 1954, his show was either simulcast or rebroadcast in more than forty markets. While the phrase “rock and roll” was in use years before, it was Freed who popularized the term with mainstream audiences.”

Regency TR-1The first transistor radio was the Regency TR-1, manufactured by Texas Instrument and Industrial Development Engineering Associates. Texas Instruments had built a prototype in May 1954, but couldn’t find an established radio manufacturer such as RCA, Philco or Emerson to develop and market a radio using their transistors. The Regency TR-1 was announced on October 18, 1954 by the Regency Division of I.D.E.A., was put on sale in November 1954, and was the first practical transistor radio made in any significant numbers.

Today they are popular collectibles, and their condition and rarity is more important than whether they actually work, although that certainly adds to their trading value.

Things to watch for:

  • The most collectible transistor radios were made between 1954 and 1963 and can be identified by the appearance of Civil Defense markings (“Conelrad”) on their dials. Look for symbols such as triangles, dots or arrows between the 6 and 7 position at the low end of the dial and just before the 16 at the top.
  • AM only – FM appeared much later than the more desirable versions, although there a few collectible models that have a marine or short wave band included.
  • Manufactured in the U.S. or Japan.
  • Smaller is generally better.
  • Condition, appearance and color versions rather than black or white.

‘World’s most valuable penny’ brings $1.7 million for charity in the US

A famous, one-of-a-kind Lincoln cent from World War Two has been sold by a New Jersey coin dealer for a record $1.7 million.

The coin was mistakenly struck from the wrong metal, 67 years ago. It was purchased by a Southwestern United States business executive, and proceeds from the sale went to a charity.

“This is the world’s most valuable penny,” said rare coin dealer Laura Sperber, President of Legend Numismatics of Lincroft, New Jersey who obtained the unique penny for the unnamed collector.

“It’s the only known example of a 1943-dated Lincoln cent incorrectly struck in a copper alloy at the Denver Mint.”

In 1936 the Homer Laughin Pottery Company, in collaboration with English potter Frederick Hurten Rhead, introduced what would become the most popular dinnerware of the 20th century. Offered originally in five colors and with a simple three ring pattern, it was an instant hit. The original advertising hailed it as ” Smart, sophisticated and rich in color, a California fashion that is sweeping the nation” They called it “Fiesta”.

Although Fiesta Ware was produced from 1936-1972, it is the original five colors that bring top dollar. Cobalt blue, light green, yellow, ivory, and “Fiesta Red” which is actually a reddish-orange, were the five colors produced in 1936. Turquoise, which many refer to as an original color, did not join the line until 1937.

Identification of Fiesta can bewilder the novice, but it simplified by recognizing the 36 pieces that comprised the line. Three sizes of divided plates, 6″. 7″, and 10″ dinner plates, two different chop plates, two sizes of cups and saucers, seven nesting mixing bowls, three different coffee/tea pots, and twenty accessory and serving pieces are original, first issue pieces.

Christmas of the first year brought seventeen more pieces to the line. The now famous disk water pitcher, covered-casseroles, egg cups and the Tom and Jerry Mugs being among the more popular. The holiday season also marked the appearance of a second creamer with a “ringed” handle.

The popularity of Fiesta was due to its bright colors, durable construction, stylized art deco shape and design, and its promotion through mass marketing. Of all the china that Homer Laughlin produced during it’s many years in business, it was Fiesta Ware that underwent the most prolific changes. Pieces were added and dropped as Laughlin constantly monitored the changing needs of the buying public. The first piece to go was the 12 compartment plate which was dropped at the end of the first year. It didn’t last long enough to be produced in turquoise, so no need to search for one. The second piece discontinued was the covered onion soup bowl which disappeared late in 1937. These tiny bowl, which come in the five original colors and turquoise, are considered a very rare find. Kept in the line, but modified early on were the sugar bowl, teacups, utility trays, creamer, nesting bowls and ashtrays. All of these are highly sought by serious collectors.

The 1940′s saw many changes for Fiesta Ware. In home entertaining was at it’s peak and colorful dinnerware for every occasion was considered a status symbol in middle-class households.Taking note of public trends, Homer Laughlin introduced one of it’s all time best sellers, a seven piece juice set. It consisted of a 30 ounce yellow disc jug and a tumbler in each of the other original colors. It was a “must have’, and no wonder when you consider that the special promotional price of the set was only $1.00! Finding all seven pieces in good condition today is a challenge, and if you find them be ready to dig deep into your pocket. A single tumbler from the set will run you in the $80-$100 range and the pitcher will easily cost you another $175-$200. The juice set was rereleased in 1952 with a grey pitcher and darker colored tumblers. It is a nice addition to a collection but should cast considerably less than it’s 1940′s counterpart.

The onset of World War II brought many changes to US factories, and Homer Laughlin was no exception. Uranium, an essential ingredient in the formula to produce Fiesta Red glaze, was needed by the government for the war effort. As as a result Fiesta was not produced in red from 1943-1959. During this period the more unusual serving pieces were also discontinued, decreasing Fiesta production by nearly one third. Overall sales of the more typical place-setting pieces remained strong and peaked around in 1948 when the company produced over 10,000,000 pieces.

The 50′s saw a number of major changes in Fiesta Ware. In 1951 the original cobalt, light green,and ivory were retired. An entirely new palette of forest green, chartreuse, rose and grey were introduced in an effort to modernize the line. But the public had lost it’s fascination with Fiesta, and by 1960 sales had plummeted. In an effort to revitalize the line Homer Laughlin introduced Fiesta Ironstone in 1968 and reduced the line to only 19 pieces, but the glory days of the once incomparable “Fiesta” were over.

Marks through the years will help you to determine the age of your Fiesta Ware. Some very early pieces were unmarked or will have the embossed “fiesta HLC USA” or “fiesta MADE IN USA” mark. Research books and online sites will help you with identification but in general there are three rules to remember. {1} If Upper case letters appear in the name Fiesta, it is new. {2} If a small letter “h” is indented under the back stamp, it is new. And {3} if the mold mark is circular, it is new.

In 1986 Fiesta was reintroduced in celebration of it’s 50th birthday. Still sturdy and vibrant in color, these “Post-86″ pieces are highly serviceable but are of little or no interest to collectors. Until next time…Linda

With a body modeled after May West and an attitude to rival Madonna’s, she has evolved into a cult figure with thousands of fans world wide. Although only a cartoon character, her obvious sensuality and her “I can do anything a man can do” approach to life, have earned her as loyal a group of fans, as any flesh and blood woman. This year she celebrates her 80th birthday, and she is still going strong. She is the incomparable Betty Boop.

Betty started life as a dog type character with a human body in the 1930′s film “Dirty Dishes”. Created by Max Fleischer with the help of animator Grim Natiwck, she was originally intended to be the love interest of Bimbo, the lead dog in the Talkartoons cartoon series. Bimbo met with moderate success, but the public instantly fell in love with the nameless little girl/dog. Within a year she had evolved from semi-canine to full human form and was given the name Betty Boop. In early 1931, with her new name and an ever growing audience, she appeared briefly in the film “Kitty From Kansas City”. Later that year in “Silly Scandals” she delighted audiences with her rendition of “You’re driving Me Crazy”, during which her blouse kept slipping down revealing a frilly bra underneath. Her next release “Ups and Downs” pushed the boundaries of good taste even further containing a scene with her dress blowing up. This scene would be recreated many years later by another famous screen vixen, Marilyn Monroe, in “The Seven Year Itch”.

Created at the very end of the “Roaring 20′s”, Betty’s risqué nature was generally accepted by an American public that was relatively uninhibited about sexuality. Her cartoons were geared to an adult audience and as a result were rather explicit, especially in the early years. Interaction between her character and the male leads in her films was suggestive, to say the least, and on more that one occasion her catch phrase “Boop-oop-a-doop” could be interpreted to be more than just scatty nonsense. From 1930-1934 she was a top box-office draw, but as the moral attitude in America shifted, Betty found her self on shaky ground.

In the mid 1930′s women’s clubs, church organizations, and various reform groups began organizing demonstrations at theaters across the country, calling for censorship of Hollywood films. With Will Hays, the head of the Motion Picture Producers and Directors Association, as their spokesperson, studios were held to new standards of decency. Under the guidelines of the “Picture Producer’s and Distributor’s Code” and the “Hays Act of 1935″ heavy fines were levied against studio that did not comply. In addition Hays created the “Purity Seal” . Movies that did not qualify for this stamp of approval were not allowed to be shown in PPDA-affiliated theatres, which most major theatres were.

Betty Boop received a complete makeover. Her wardrobe was altered to skirts that reached below her knees and shirts that fully covered her cleavage. No more clothing that slipped off or back lighting to expose her ample silhouette. Films from 1935 forward saw her as a baby sitter, teacher or housewife. Gone were the great jazz songs of the 1930′s that had been the back drop for many of the early films, removed due to their questionable lyrics. The surrealism of “Minnie the Moocher” and “Snow White” was replaced with story lines about Betty and her new pet monkey. In fact, by the time the censors finished, Betty was all but unrecognizable and the public gradually lost interest in her films. After appearing in “Yip, Yip, Yippy” in 1939 Betty Boop retired. In the nine short years of her career she had worked with such greats as Rudy Vallee, Cab Calloway, Don Redman and Louis Armstrong and appeared in over 100 animated features

The risqué little girl with an air of innocence still enjoys a following of loyal fans who are willing to pay top dollar for authentic 1930′s Betty Boop memorabilia. Recent auction results include results include a string holder for $250, a celluloid bobble-head Betty for $450, a twelve inch chalk carnival figure for $1,994 and a linen-matted 1930′s Paramount movie poster for a whopping $7,455. In the early 1900′s the art glass market was ruled by the Tiffany family. Beautiful and elegant, it was indeed “fit for a king”. The problem for the majority of the American public was, that you had to be a king to afford it!

In 1905 the general public was introduced to a beautiful iridescent glass that they could afford. By coating press glass with a sodium solution before firing, mass-production factories were able to produce a glass that mimicked the beauty of high luster Tiffany, and they called it “Carnival Glass”. Women from average income household’s could now purchase a wonderful piece of art glass at their local department store, and purchase it they did. For the next two decades, carnival glass would be the most popular glass in America.

Fenton, Northwood, Dugan, Imperial and Millersburg were the five major manufacturers of carnival glass, but several other factories produced small quantities. Among the plants with limited production were Cambridge Glass, Westmoreland, McKee Glass, and the Jenkins’s Glass Company of Kokomo, Indiana.

Jenkins made only a few patterns. Their main color was marigold and most all of their patterns were a combination of flowers and near-cut designs. These pieces, while not of the higher price range on a national level, are often sought after by regional collectors.

Carnival Glass VaseOne of the most successful of the major producers, was Fenton Glass. Their success, in art glass production, is largely credited to the talents of Frank Fenton. Each piece he designed demonstrated his astute awareness of what the public admired in glass ornamentation. Then, as now, Fenton’s works are considered by many to be the finest examples of early carnival glass.

In all over 1,000 patterns of carnival glass were produced from 1905-1925. The availability and selection of the glass has long made it a favorite among collector. Colors most commonly found include purple, dark blue, marigold, and green. In lesser number you will find pieces in clear, white, aqua, red, peach, ice blue, ice green, amber, lavender and smoke.

In the early 1970′s the market was flooded with a reissue of several patterns in both the dark blue and marigold colors. Common examples include a pitcher and glasses and a covered compote. These”new”carnival pieces were offer in discount stores and lower end gift shops and are of no interest to collectors.

The differences in new and old carnival are considerable. If you are uncertain as to the visible differences between the two, stop by your local antique shop and ask to be shown examples of each. Once you have seen the two issues set side by side, you will have no problem telling them apart

To own a piece of carnival, is to own a small piece of American art glass history. It stands as a tribute to the ingenuity and skill of the American glass makers skills, and was the last form of hand-shaped glass to ever be produced in the United States.

The three-day weekend event will be held in Ann Arbor, Mich., by Showtime Auction Services.

(ANN ARBOR, Mich.) – Nearly 2,000 lots from several major collections in an array of categories – firefighting items from the Granite Handtub Museum in Newmarket, N.H., a private arcade machine collection, around 150 rare toys and banks and more – will be sold Apr. 9-11 by Showtime Auction Services, at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The three-day Spring “Live” Auction will also feature advertising, country store, barber shop, coin-op, gambling, general store, soda fountain, Coca-Cola, breweriana, petroliana, automobilia, Western Americana, tobacciana, saloon, brothel, die cabinets, showcases, store fixtures, Black Americana, salesman’s samples, Native American items, trade signs and more.

The first day of the sale (Fri., Apr. 9, noon to 5 p.m.) will be for live attendees only (no phone, absentee or Internet bidding). The Saturday and Sunday sessions (Apr. 10, 9-6, and Apr. 11, 9-4) will have live bidding plus phone, absentee and Internet bidding (via iCollector.com). A preview will be held Friday, Apr. 9, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, with a free hot breakfast from 8-10.

Mermaid Arcade Game and Cigar Store IndianThe top lot of the auction is expected to be a vintage pistol-operated Mermaid “The War Game” coin-op arcade machine (est. $200,000-$300,000). The exceedingly rare coin-op arcade machine, one of only twelve made and one of only ten known to exist today, was made by the Matheson Manufacturing Company. It was repainted and is in overall good working condition. Seventy other coin-op machines, most of them rare arcades, will also be offered at the auction.

Also expected to do well is a beautifully restored Hunneman hand-drawn hand tub/fire pump (est. $30,000-$40,000), one of three handtubs in the auction and one of over 200 fire fighting items from the Granite Handtub Museum. Built in 1854 (Button #364), the handtub originated in Cleremont, N.H., and was purchased in 1860 by the town of New Ipswich, N.H.

Another item from the museum is a decorated lamp for the button handtub used by a veteran firemen’s organization called the Red Jackets (est. $5,000-$10,000). In 1892, the tub was entered into a pumpers’ competition at a local muster in Massachusetts and won first prize. The piece was considered the most decorated tub of its time and still resides in Massachusetts.

Vintage toys will include three examples by Buddy L: an extremely rare toy bus that was once ridden by children who would steer it from side wheels (est. $8,000-$12,000); a red baby toy truck in excellent condition with the original tag (est. $6,000-$10,000); and an outdoor toy train with nine cars, complete with five pieces of track and connectors (est. $12,000-$20,000).

Another one of the 150 or so rare toys to be sold is a pre-war Japanese early tin toy race car, very rare and in very good condition (est. $2,000-$4,000). From a completely different category, but not to be overlooked, is a handsome Cigar Store Indian, possibly a Samuel Robb, but with no signature (est. $25,000-$40,000). The piece’s later re-paint has an emerging patina.

Over 20 rare mechanical banks will be offered, to include a cast-iron Boy Scout Camp example in excellent original condition, with 90 percent of the original paint still intact (est. $1,000-$3,500); and a rare circus bank (est. 2,500-$5,000). Also sold will be an extremely rare Pepsi-Cola can in the shape of a spool of thread, the only one Showtime has ever seen and in excellent condition (est. $2,000-$3,000).

A dozen automatons will include a one-cent, coin-operated gambling automaton, featuring a monkey who waves a magic wand, causing a dice table to drop down and then pop up quickly again, sending the dice rolling (est. $10,000-$20,000); and a store window automaton depicting a clock works gentleman. Wind him up and his head moves back and forth (est. $4,000-$8,000).

Additional top lots include a Studebaker & Rockne Authorized Service & Parts two-sided porcelain sign, the only one known and in very good condition (est. $7,500-$10,000; Note: Rockne cars were only manufactured for two years); an 1891 calendar for The Great Rock Island Route Train Company, with full pad (est. $3,000-$6,000); and a Mosley folding bath tub, the same type used in brothels in the 1800s (est. $8,000-$10,000).

Mr. Eckles, owner of Showtime Auction Services, said of the auction, “This is the most diversified selection of merchandise with high quality and rare items in over 60 antique collector categories represented.”

The preferred hotel for the auction is The Weber’s Inn in Ann Arbor, Mich., located about 25 minutes from the Detroit airport (DTW). The phone number for reservations is (734) 769-2500. The Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds (the venue of choice for Showtime Auction Services over the past several years) is located at 5055 Ann Arbor-Saline Road in Ann Arbor. Showtime conducts only four auctions a year (two live, two absentee), and they need to be held somewhere commensurate with the importance of the auction. The Apr. 9-11 sale is important.

Showtime’s next auction after this one will be a Summer Absentee, Phone and Internet Auction, scheduled to end July 9. Featured will be a fabulous collection of arcade, firefighting memorabilia, advertising, country store, barber shop, gambling, coin-op, toys, banks, general store, Coca-Cola, breweriana, petroliana, automobilia, Western Americana and much more.

After that, Showtime will hold a big Fall “Live” Auction Oct. 1-3 (also at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Ann Arbor). Then, a Winter 2011 Absentee Auction will end Jan. 15, 2011. Flyers will be mailed out mid-December and an online catalog will be posted about Jan. 1. The categories for these sales will be similar to those of the Apr. 9-11 and Jul. 9 auction events.
