Son of Frankenstein original movie poster

Filed under: — site admin @ 11:23 pm

Looking at our live eBay auction link tonight for Pre 1940 Movie Posters, we spotted the following listing:

“SON OF FRANKENSTEIN ‘39 KARLOFF LUGOSI UNIVERSAL HORROR!
This is a RARE Original 14×36 Insert for the 1939 Universal Horror Classic SON OF FRANKENSTEIN starring Basil Rathbone as Baron Wolf von Frankenstein, Boris Karloff as The Frankenstein Monster, Bela Lugosi as Ygor, Lionel Atwill as Inspector Krogh, Josephine Hutchinson as Elsa von Frankenstein and Donnie Dunagan as Peter von Frankenstein! This is a GREAT UNIVERSAL HORROR INSERT with SUPER BRIGHT VIVID COLORS that is 65 YEARS OLD!”

With 20 hours left (as of this writing), no one has taken the plunge and put out the starting bid of US $19,999.99 – hmmmm, was it all the CAPITALS in the description (nah, it’s actually a nice looking poster in great condition) – or was that opening bid too intimidating? It’s kind of interesting after seeing what the “Bride of Frankenstein” lobby card went for this month….

Insightful comments would be welcome…

Kinsey

Filed under: — site admin @ 8:36 pm

According to the Movie Marketing Blog:

Kinsey’ Protesters Become Inadvertent Marketers for the Film

Quote:
“According to Variety, a conservative backlash is brewing over this Friday’s upcoming release of ‘Kinsey,’ the biopic about the famed sex researcher.
…Protests from conservatives will only make these people MORE EAGER to find out just what all the fuss is about. In fact, take a look at the free publicity they’ve generated. It looks like a movie marketing goldmine to me…”

Did it work? According to the numbers on Yahoo! Movies for the Nov 19 – 21 weekend:
Kinsey – $577,721, total for 2 weeks: $826,679, although that’s only 36 theatres (compared to 3017 theatres for last weekends’ number 1, National Treasure which pulled down $35,142,554). The numbers look pretty good – a $16,000 average per theatre compared to National Treasures average of $11,600.

Also from Yahoo! Movies the critics gave the movie an average of A- (based on 6 reviews), while the Yahoo! users gave it a B (based on 193 reviews).

The Yahoo! synopsis:
“Liam Neeson stars as Kinsey, who in 1948 irrevocably changed American culture and created a media sensation with his book “Sexual Behavior in the Human Male.” Asking thousands of people about the most intimate aspects of their lives, Kinsey lifted the weight of doubt and shame from a society in which sex was hidden, and knowledge was dangerous. His work sparked one of the most intense cultural debates of the past century – a debate that rages on today.”

Bride of Frankenstein Record Price

Filed under: — site admin @ 6:32 pm

Further to my earlier post on the Movie Poster Auction that was recently held by Heritage Movie Poster Auctions:

Bride of Frankenstein“Heritage Movie Poster Auctions (HMPA) set a new world record in their most recent sale, when a Title Lobby Card from Universal Studio’s classic 1935 film, The Bride of Frankenstein, sold for $46,000.

“This is a new high water mark for lobby cards,” said Grey Smith, Director of HMPA. “Bride of Frankenstein is a legendary movie, considered by many to be the best of the classic Universal horror films, and paper from this title is extremely rare and highly desirable. I was confident that this card would perform well, but these results are far beyond what anyone could have expected.”

“We’re starting the process of claiming a Guinness World Record for this sale,” Smith continued. “To my knowledge, no other dealer in vintage posters holds such a record.”

The card was described as being in Very Fine condition and carried a pre-auction estimate of $12-15,000.”

Creature from the Black Lagoon – DVD collection

From DVD Savant Review: CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON – THE LEGACY COLLECTION

Creature from the Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature, The Creature Walks Among Us

Reviewed by Glenn Erickson

“The best, and practically the only 1950s original movie monster is everyone’s favorite denizen of the Amazon, The Creature. Drummed up by Universal when studios were still putting resources and effort into far-out fantastic films, The Creature, aka The Gill Man is a beautifully designed and executed fish-monster, perhaps the best rubber-suited thing Hollywood ever turned out. He has an immediate graphic personality barely tapped by his three starring vehicles, and an immediate appeal for kids who like their monsters big, slimy and savage.”
