Cool Hand Luke Poster

Cool Hand Luke was one of those movies that made an indelible impression upon my young mind back in the sixties. The strongest memory is the warden uttering “What we have here… is a failure to communicate…”. Who was that guy anyway? Strother Martin, according to what I’m reading here…

… I was 9 years old the year this movie took away one Oscar for best supporting actor for George Kennedy. Second strongest memory – the egg eating sequence by Paul Newman, one of the funniest things I thought I had ever seen (at that time – but still holds a lot of appeal).

The Specs:
Cast: Paul Newman, George Kennedy, J.D. Cannon, Strother Martin, Dennis Hopper, Anthony Zerbe, Lou Antonio, Wayne Rogers, Harry Dean Stanton, Ralph Waite, Joe Don Baker, Richard (Dick) Davalos, Jo Van Fleet, Robert Drivas, Clifton James, Morgan Woodward, Luke Askew, Robert Donner, Warren Finnerty, James Gammon, Rance Howard, Buck Kartalian, John McLiam, Charles Tyner, Donn Pearce, Marc Cavell, Charles Hicks, James Jeter, Robert Luster, John Pearce, Eddie Rosson
Directed By: Stuart Rosenberg
Written by: Frank Pierson, Donn Pearce
Cinematography By: Conrad L. Hall
Music By: Lalo Schifrin
Producer: Warner Bros., Jalem Productions.

Synopsis from MovieGoods.com:
One of the last great men-in-chains films. A man (Newman) sentenced to sweat out a term on a prison farm refuses to compromise with authority. Martin shines in his supporting role as the oily warden, uttering that now-famous phrase, “What we have here is a failure to communicate.” Kennedy’s performance as leader of the chain gang won him an Oscar. Based on the novel by Donn Pearce.
