Cool Hand Luke was one of those movies that made an indelible impression upon my young mind back in the sixties. The strongest memory is the warden uttering “What we have here… is a failure to communicate…”. Who was that guy anyway? Strother Martin, according to what I’m reading here…
… I was 9 years old the year this movie took away one Oscar for best supporting actor for George Kennedy. Second strongest memory – the egg eating sequence by Paul Newman, one of the funniest things I thought I had ever seen (at that time – but still holds a lot of appeal).

One of the last great men-in-chains films. A man (Newman) sentenced to sweat out a term on a prison farm refuses to compromise with authority. Martin shines in his supporting role as the oily warden, uttering that now-famous phrase, “What we have here is a failure to communicate.” Kennedy’s performance as leader of the chain gang won him an Oscar.
