Thanksgiving is one of the year’s most competitive times at the box office but National Treasure was able to hold off the competition and remain at the top for a second straight week. The Nicolas Cage action adventure took in $32 million last weekend to easily keep the #1 position. Moving up to second spot in its fourth week of release was The Incredibles with $23 M, followed by Christmas With the Kranks with $21 M, The Polar Express with $19 M and SpongeBob SquarePants with $17 M. Disney’s The Incredibles has now passed the $200 M mark in just four weeks of release.
Also debuting last weekend was Alexander, which arrived with a resounding thud. Fueling by very bad reviews and poor word of mouth, Alexander took in just $13 M in its first weekend and finished a very disappointing sixth. With a very high budget and big stars Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie, the expectations were much, much higher for the Oliver Stone historical epic.
Three new films will make their debuts on the first weekend of December. I Am David, House of Flying Daggers and Closer, starring new mom Julia Roberts, all open up in theatres this Friday. The following Friday will see two big sequels make their debuts – Blade: Trinity and Ocean’s Twelve.
