Heritage’s first Internet Movie Poster Auction (IMPA) sale #54121 ended Sunday, December 19, with 240 lots offered. 200 bidders placed bids, and 88 of them were successful, for a total sell-through of $24,990.15 for 239 lots (99.58% of lots offered).
Highlights of that sale included:
Ghost of Frankenstein (Universal, 1942).
Insert (14″ X 36″). Released Friday the 13th this was the fourth in the Frankenstein series from Universal. REALIZED: $1,265.
Dead of Night (Universal, 1946).
Three Sheet (41″ X 81″). This was the first horror film which contained short episodes, each more thrilling than the one before. When a man arrives at a cabin, he finds several other people there. They each relate the nightmares they’ve been having. The film was incredibly inventive and intense for 1945, and in many places the film was considered too frightening to be shown! REALIZED: $2,530.
Jailhouse Rock (MGM, 1957).
One Sheet (27″ X 41″). Long before MTV came along, the movies gave teenagers a look at rock n’ roll stars of the 1950s and 1960s performing their current hits. Elvis Presley was literally the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” when he gyrated his way to on-screen success in “Jailhouse Rock.” REALIZED: $1,937.75.
2004 Box-Office Review
Total Hollywood ticket receipts in 2004 reached a new record level of $9.4 billion, with Sony Studios being the top-grossing studio followed by Warner Bros. The actual number of tickets sold in 2004 did decline to 1.5 billion though, from 2003’s 1.53 billion and 2002’s 1.6 billion.
