Well, big surprise, Star Wars continues to dominate the box office for the May 27 – 30 weekend with a rake of $70,750,000 for a total of $271,193,000 after two weeks.

What’s more surprising is the strong showing for The Longest Yard which came in at number three with $60,000,000 on it’s opening weekend.

Less surprising, Madagascar nailed down the number two spot with $61,000,000 – Dreamworks is expecting (and so are the shareholders) a hit with this one, and it looks like they’re delivering…

Well, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has come and gone (it’s dropped to number 11 on the box office charts for a total of $48,645,000), but come on, Douglas Adams creation is a great franchise – I still recommend watching the original BBC series (or read the books!). Have a beer, light one one up, enjoy…

Opening today from Paramount, is The Longest Yard starring Adam Sandler and Burt Reynolds returning to familiar ground.

Also opening today, and expected to rake in some cash for Dreamworks is Madagascar.

Seems Dreamworks is in a little trouble with the investment community for overstating expected earnings from the Shrek 2 DVD sales.

They’re banking on Madagascar to pull them out of the fire ( ah, the fine dance of money, movies and art/animation)…

The weekend numbers are in, and Revenge of the Sith set some new records for a box office haul, but failed to match the three day record of Spider-Man three years ago.

Episode III took in 108.4 million dollars in North America for the three day weekend tally, but set records for the four day period (158.4 million dollars on US and Canadian screens), and also a single-day record, pulling in more than 50 million dollars on its opening day Thursday, breaking “Shrek 2′s” single-day record of nearly 44.8 million dollars.

What a surprise… I guess those pirate copies that started floating around the net on Friday didn’t hurt it any.
