Three new opening releases captured the top three positions in the movie box office, according to the weekend estimates. Robin Williams’ RV placed first, followed by the controversial United 93 with the teen gymnastic flick Stick It in the number three position.
The estimated weekend box office numbers:
1) RV – Sony Pictures Releasing – $16,400,000
2) United 93 – $11,605,000 – $11,605,000
3) Stick It – Buena Vista Pictures Distribution – $11,255,000
4) Silent Hill – TriStar Pictures – $9,300,000
5) Scary Movie 4 – The Weinstein Company , Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, Dimension Films – $7,808,000
Set for release May 19, 2006 from Lions Gate, the psychopath is Kane (I believe he’s a wrestling star – excuse my ignorance): “Seven feet tall. Four hundred pounds. A rusty steel plate screwed into his skull and razor-sharp fingernails that pluck out his victims’ eyes.”
Sounds nice – interesting poster design, though.

Opening April 28th, 2006, from Universal Pictures, United 93 is “A drama that tells the story of the passengers and crew, their families on the ground and the flight controllers who watched in dawning horror as United Airlines Flight 93 became the fourth hijacked plane on the day of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil: September 11, 2001.”
It looks like it’s okay to release movies based on 9/11 now – Oliver Stone’s “World Trade Center” being the high profile movie set for release on August 11th, 2006 and starring Nicolas Cage.

The Sentinel managed to rank in the top five box office draws this past weekend, and it seems to have a strong cast. We know that Eva Longoria is a strong draw right now, but there’s still a place in our heart for Kim Basinger. Oh, and there are those guys in the film as well.

It looks like a fairly quiet box office weekend, with Silent Hill managing to pull off the number one spot with receipts of around $20 million – not all that earth shattering. Ice Age 2 continued to draw in it’s fourth weekend, grabbing the number four spot with revenues of almost $13 million for a total draw of $168 million.
The only other new movies to crack the top ten were The Sentinel in the number three spot, and American Dreamz in the number eight spot.

“An ex-convict gets caught up in gang violence and turmoil after his car is hijacked with his son inside.” This new action adventure from Rogue Pictures opens June 23, 2006 and stars Tyrese Gibson, with hip-hop superstar The Game getting the villian role.
Vondie Curtis-Hall (who was an actor on the CBS medical drama “Chicago Hope” from 1995 to 1999) also directed Redemption: The Stan “Tookie” Williams Story (2004), Glitter (2001), and Gridlock’d (1997).

Scary Movie 4 managed to knock Ice Age 2 out of the top spot in it’s opening weekend, based on the early estimates of the weekend box office. The only other newcomer to crack the top five was Walt Disney Pictures’ The Wild, which took in what had to be a disappointing $9.5 million.

The latest sequel in the popular car-racing film series is based in Japan this time around. Lucas Black and Sung Kang are the lead actors but the automobiles are the real stars of the film. It opens June 16th, 2006 and is distributed by Universal Pictures.
