Director Terry Zwigoff returns to a familiar theme similiar to his films “Ghost World” and “Crumb” and is his second adaptation of a comic story by Daniels Clowes. “Ghost World” (a young Scarlett Johansson in this one) garnered them both an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2002.

Distributed by Sony Pictures Classics, it had a limited release on May 5 and then a wider release on May 12, 2006. …haven’t seen it anywhere around here, though. We’ll probably have to wait for the DVD release.

Terry Zwigoff also directed Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa (2003).

Invincible

We posted on Saturday about the X-Men’s strong start in the weekend box office, and it surpassed expectations by pulling in over $100 million over three days, and over $120 million over the four day Memorial Day long weekend. It managed to break the previous Memorial Day all time opening of The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and had the second biggest single day behind Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Who would have thought?

Meanwhile, The Da Vinci Code dropped into second place, pulling in a paltry (!) $43 million…

Flushed Away

DreamWorks Animation and Aardman Features were the studios behind the hit animated movie, “Wallace & Gromit – The Curse of the Were-Rabbit“, and they’re teaming up again for this computer animated flick which is due out on November 3, 2006.

X-Men: The Last Stand

The third installment in the series, X-Men: The Last Stand roared out of the starting gate, pulling in over $44 million on it’s opening day – giving it the second-largest opening of all time, behind “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith”.

Because of the Memorial Day long weekend, Fox News projected that the movie could take in $150 million over the four days. I guess moviegoers were itching for a little mutant action…

Gridiron Gang

The Longest Yard morphs into a juvenile delinquent high school football team, in this story based on actual events. Opening September 15, 2006 from Columbia, it stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” host, Xzibit.

It’s roots come from a television documentary by Lee and Linda Stanley which won an Emmy Award in 1993.

Another blockbuster release is looming next month with Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns debuting in theatres on June 30, 2006 featuring Brandon Routh wearing the “S” on his chest, Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane and Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther.

ComingSoon.net has a scoop on the final international trailer for , which will be released in regular, IMAX and IMAX 3D theatres. They tell us that the trailer was shown with The Da Vinci Code in the UK and should be seen in domestic markets with X-Men: The Last Stand. Well, darn – I came close on the office pool, but that only counts in horseshoes as they say. Despite the early critical reviews that preceding the opening, The Da Vinci Code managed to rack up some pretty solid numbers over the weekend, pulling in around $77 million in the domestic market and over $224 million worldwide, allowing it to dominate the box office.

Also debuting this weekend, Over the Hedge with the voice of Bruce Willis as the racoon, snagged the number two spot. Mission Impossible 3 dropped into third spot, followed by Poseidon and RV.

Mission Impossible 3 managed to hold onto the number one spot at the box office this past weekend, with Poseidon making it’s debut in the number two position. The only other new movie to crack the top five (in fact the top ten), was Lindsay Lohan’s Just My Luck.

As we mentioned earlier, we’re still waiting for the Da Vinci Code, which should probably blow everything else out of the water…

Lady in the Water

Coming to theatres and distributed by Warner Brothers on July 21st, 2006 is the newest mystery / thriller / fantasy from director M. Night Shyamalan. It’s a tale of a bedtime story coming to life, and stars Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Shyamalan’s past director credits include The Village (2004), Signs (2002), Unbreakable (2000), The Sixth Sense (1999), Wide Awake (1998), and Praying With Anger (1993).

Just My Luck

The brat is back. This one opened this past weekend on May 12, 2006 from 20th Century Fox. From the user and critic reviews, it looks like a so-so movie (come on – it’s Lindsay Lohan – is that a surprise?). It did manage to crack the top five for box office returns, however, pulling in around a whopping $5,500,000 (that’s sarcasm). I guess that shows how poor the box office pull is at the moment. Everyone is waiting to go see The Da Vinci Code.

Director Donald Petrie has more than a few films under his belt, including Welcome to Mooseport (2004), How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), Miss Congeniality (2000), My Favorite Martian (1999), The Associate (1996), Richie Rich (1994), The Favor (1994), Grumpy Old Men (1993), Opportunity Knocks (1990), and Mystic Pizza (1988).
