Miami Vice managed to grab the number one box office spot away from Pirates, but not with a bang – pulling in just over $25 milllion. Critics don’t seem to be too impressed with Michael Mann’s big screen take on his stylish TV show.

The other two new movie releases, John Tucker Must Die and The Ant Bully managed top five placements in what was a relatively bleak weekend at the box office. Looks like Hollywood needs a few more good pirates…

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance

Lot’s of alternative names for this one: Shed Tears for Lady Vengeance, Kind-Hearted Ms. Geum-Ja, My Lady Vengeance, Chinjeolhan geumjassi, Kind geum-ja.

Preceded by the films ‘Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance’ and ‘Oldboy’, this final installment of director Park Chan-wook’s vengeance trilogy finds a woman seeking revenge after she is framed and betrayed by a co-conspirator.

Distributed by Tartan films, it had a limited release opening on May 5th, 2006 in New York.

The Pathfinder

Pathfinder is a remake of a 1987 Norwegian film titled Ofelas. The plot summary is the story of a Viking expedition that meets a grim fate upon reaching North America. The lone survivor, a young boy, is adopted by a local Indian tribe and raised as their own.

It’s directed by Marcus Nispel of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 remake) notoriety, and apparently from Fox.

The Last Kiss

Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby) gets the screenwriter credit in this contemporary comedy-drama about life, love, infidelity, forgiveness, marriage, friendship… and coming to grips with turning 30.

As some trivia, Tony Goldwyn is the grandson of legendary industry pioneer Samuel Goldwyn and son of the successful independent producer/distributor Samuel Goldwyn Jr.

The Science of Sleep

Opening in limited release starting September 15, 2006, and with progessively wider releases in the weeks following, it’s being distributed by Warner Independent Pictures.

It’s about a shy and withdrawn man who is coaxed to return to his childhood home with the promise of a job…in the mundane world of copy setting. Jet Li’s Fearless

Also known as Legend of a Fighter, the subtext on the poster reads “Jet Li in his final martial arts epic”.

Jet Li portrays real-life martial arts legend Huo Yuanjia, who became the most famous fighter in all of China at the turn of the 20th Century.

From Wikipedia: “According to Shenzhen Daily newspaper, Jet Li has announced his retirement from martial arts films after the film Fearless, known as Huo Yuanjia in China”, but then goes on to state that another of his films, Rogue, began principal photography in the spring of 2006. There was also an official announcement in May 2006, that Jackie Chan will be making a movie together with Jet Li to begin shooting in 2007.

Night Listener

Opening August 4, 2006 from Miramax, this latest Robin Williams film is based on a book by Armistead Maupin, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Williams plays a public radio storyteller who forms an intense phone relationship with a young listener and the social worker who rescued him from a life of abuse. He soon comes to the startling realization that it is quite possible that neither the boy nor his painful account of his childhood really exist.

The big question is, will any of this week’s new releases be able to knock Capatain Jack and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest off of it’s number one box office spot?

One of our favorite muses, Uma Thurman cranks it up in the new comedy, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, and dishes out the good hurt on Luke Wilson. M. Night Shyamalan returns with his new fantasy, Lady in the Water, and the latest Kevin Smith goofball comedy, Clerks 2 make it’s debut in theatres.

Animation fans and parents looking to occupy the kids have Monster House from executive producers, Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis to look forward to as well.
