From Fox Searchlight Pictures, the Last King of Scotland has a limited release opening on September 27, 2006. These ones are hot. Due out next year, probably in March of 2007, TMNT could be a major blockbuster. This all CGI version will be distributed by Warner Brothers and The Weinstein Company. Apparently, “the PG-rated movie will derive its tone from the original comic-book series and will be grittier than the previous live action pictures.”

The release date is almost a year away, but the hype machine has kicked in. Set for July 4, 2007 from DreamWorks Pictures (Paramount), Michael Bay’s big budget special effects movie will bring a new twist to the popular franchise that has been going strong for over 22 years.

Hollywoodland is the directorial debut for Allen Coulter, an Emmy nominated director for such TV series as the Soprano’s and Sex in the City. The back story sounds interesting – based on the real life mystery of the murder of George Reeves (Superman) in the 1950’s. …and Ben Affleck plays Reeves, so at least we know he’s the one to get knocked off.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby motored into first place on the weekend box office charts, pulling in an estimated $47 million on around 5,200 screens and making it the top comedy debut of the year. Rory Bruer, Sony’s president of distribution, said that the studio originally hoped Talladega Nights would open to $30 million, so they have to be happy with this opening.
In second place, The Barnyard did a solid $16 million in a movie market that seems to be bursting at the seams with computer animation this year. The only other new release to break the top five was the British horror, The Descent.

Directed by Neil Marshall (he also wrote and directed Dog Soldiers in 2002), this British horror flick opened today on August 4th, 2006, and seems to be picking up some good reviews by both critics and theatre goers alike. Apparently not your usual R-rated blood and gore fest….
