Opening July 18, 2008 from Warner Bros. Pictures “The Dark Knight” is one of the most highly anticipated films of next summer. Director Christopher Nolan returns with his sequel to “Batman Begins”, which sees him reuniting with Christian Bale as the caped crusader.

“With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman has been making headway against local crime…until a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker unleashes a fresh reign of chaos across Gotham City.”

Heath Ledger puts a distinctive and creepy spin on the Joker. Right now, there’s a great preview/trailer showing during the IMAX screenings of “I am Legend“.

“Alvin and the Chipmunks” was no slouch at the box office last weekend, pulling in over $45 million which woul have been enough for first place if it weren’t for Will Smith and “I am Legend” spoiling the party.

Jason Lee (“My Name Is Earl“) leads the hybrid CG/live action cast as David Seville in the film which is based on the 1950s cartoon series about chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore, who lay waste to Seville’s surroundings and sing in three-part harmony.

Will Smith and “I am Legend” opens this weekend, and it’s looking like it should be the first blockbuster of the holiday season and one of the few movies to make an impact at the box office in what’s been a pretty lacklustre fall and winter season for Hollywood. In fact, only one other movie broke the $40 million mark in its opening weekend this fall and that was “American Gangster” ($43.6 million in November).

The other top box office weekend openings this year were “Bourne Ultimatum” ($69 million in August), “Rush Hour 3” ($49 million), “The Simpsons Movie” ($74 million in July), “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” ($77 million in July), “Transformers” ($70 million in July), “Ratatouille” ($47 million), “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” ($58 million), “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” ($114 million in May), “Shrek the Third” ($121 million in May), “Spider-Man 3” ($151 million in May), “300″ ($71 million in March), and “Ghost Rider” ($45 million in February).

The Golden Compass

Apparently, “The Golden Compass” is stirring up some controversy with both fans of the original books by Philip Pullman, and the Catholic Church.

According to a news story on stuff.co.nz:

“The Golden Compass, a $US180 million picture released on December 7, is caught between a US Catholic group that has called for a boycott of what it sees as an attack on religion and Pullman purists who do not want the original watered down.

The US-based Catholic League urged Christians not to see the movie, fearing even a diluted version of the book might draw people to read the bestselling His Dark Materials trilogy.”
