Soul Men

Opening next week on November 7th is the comedy “Soul Men” starring Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac. Jackson and Mac play two former backup soul singers who travel cross country to perform at a tribute concert in honor of their famous former band leader.

The movie is described by Jackson as a “a fitting last performance” for Bernie Mac, who tragically died on August 9th at the age of 50 after suffering complications from pneumonia.

In a strange twist, blues legend Isaac Hayes, who had a cameo in the film starring as himself, also died the day after Mac – a situation that Jackson must find hard, but refuses to let their passing upset him as he promotes the new film, because he’s convinced Bernie Mac is laughing about the situation up in heaven.

Mena Suvari stars in the TV movie “Sex and Lies in Sin City: The Ted Binion Scandal” which is based on the true story of about the death of wealthy Las Vegas casino heir Ted Binion (played by Matthew Modine) at the hands of his lover and her con-artist boyfriend. The Lifetime movie premiered this week.

As there were several lawsuits about the trials pending at the time of the filming, Suvari had to be careful about how she delivered every line of dialogue.

Suvari’s credits include “American Beauty“, “American Pie“, “The Garden of Eden”, “Day of the Dead” and TV roles in “Six Feet Under,” “ER” and “Boy Meets World.”

The Seven Year Itch

The “Seven Year Itch” is often cited as one of the great comedies of its time and in 1955, the film version became the biggest US box office hit of that summer. Marilyn Monroe plays a blonde model and actress on a toothpaste commercial whose name is never revealed in the film – she is simply referred to as “The Girl”. The movie also contains one of Monroe’s most iconic images – the scene where her dress is blown up above her waist by a passing train underneath a subway grate she is standing on.

Monroe was truly a legend, whose accomplishments during her short life has made her one of those enduring pop culture icons.

We were trying to find the price that her famous “Seven Year Itch” dress fetched at auction. We did come across the auction result of another famous piece of her wardrobe – the evening dress she wore at the famous birthday tribute to President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962. The final price at the 1999 Christie’s auction was an astounding $1,150,000. We wonder where that dress is now?

During Profiles in History’s auction on July 30, 2004, Monroe’s signature red evening gown from the 1953 film “How to Marry a Millionaire” was sold for $48,875 while Monroe and Jane Russell’s matching sequin dance costumes with hats from the 1953 film “Gentleman Prefer Blondes” sold for $40,250.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year Takes Box Office Gold

It’s only Sunday afternoon, but it looks like Disney’s “HSM 3” will easily win the weekend with a box office take of around $42 million, with industry watchers projecting a run that will take the musical to over $150 million in total receipts.

Second place will go to Lionsgate’s “Saw V” with a strong showing of what should be about $30 million.

Zack and Miri Make A Porno

Opening next week on October 31, 2008 is a new comedy from director Kevin Smith and starring a red hot Seth Rogen. Apparently, the movie title and the posters have created some controversy with the MPAA banning the original advance poster and a fight over the movies rating. Good enough to create a bit of buzz…

Oh, and we notice that Traci Lords is in the credits, who was controversial in her time as well. Lords first achieved notoriety for her underage appearances in pornographic films and Penthouse magazine.

The quick synopsis: “Zack and Miri are two lifelong friends who are deep in debt and enlist the help of their friends to make a porno movie for some quick cash. But as everybody starts “doing” everybody, Zack and Miri realize that they may have more feelings for each other than they previously thought.”

Max Payne number one at the box office

“Max Payne” won the box office this past weekend, as Marky Mark (Mark Wahlberg) had his all-time seventh-best opening with this video game to film adaptation, despite less then stellar reviews and a 16 percent fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes (ouch!).

Weighing in with $16.7 million, Max Payne knocked off last weekend’s box office champ, “Beverly Hills Chihuahua“, which landed in second place. With an impressive per theater average of $6,617 and a total of just over $10.5 million, “The Secret Life of Bees” was a surprise hit in third place, while Oliver Stone’s portrait of George W. Bush’s legacy, “W” finished the weekend in fourth place with a close $10.5 million.

The only other new release to make the top ten was “Sex Drive“, which faltered out of the gate with just over $3.6 million.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year Opens October 24, 2008

The wait is over for High School Musical fans, as the big screen version hits the theatres on Thursday. Disney’s “HSM” phenomenon returns as America’s favorite high school students (Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Blue and Monique Coleman) hit senior year.

This should be the final bow for the original cast, but we doubt that Disney is going to drop one of their most successful franchises, so stay tuned for HSM 4.
