Opening on May 15, director Ron Howard returns with the second adaptation of Dan Brown’s bestselling novels, “Angels & Demons”. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Harvard religious expert Robert Langdon, who once again finds that forces with ancient roots are willing to stop at nothing, even murder, to advance their goals. This time, it’s the secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati pitted against the Catholic Church, their most despised enemy.

The film is produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and John Calley, with a screenplay by David Koepp and Akiva Goldsman.

ctv.ca reports that: “Tom Hanks will reportedly surpass his US$25 million-dollar “Da Vinci” paycheque. His rumoured take for “Angels & Demons” falls between US$29 and US$49 million. That makes Hanks the highest-paid actor in Hollywood.”

Bolt Opens in the Number Three Spot at the Box Office

The other new release this past weekend was Walt Disney’s non-Pixar animated family flick, “Bolt”, which might have suffered from “Twilight’s” strong opening, but is expected to pull some strong numbers over the extended holiday.

Opening in third spot with $26.2 million, but just slightly behind last weekend’s box office champ, “Quantum of Solace“, Bolt also launched with a record 982 3-D presentations which accounted for 39 percent of its total box office take.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa Tops Last Weekends Box Office

The holiday season got a great kick off, as Dreamworks “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” raked in a cool $63.1 million on approximately 7,100 screens last weekend, and ranking it among the ten biggest animated starts of all time. It also set a record for an IMAX animation debut, with a gross of $3.5 million at 129 venues.

The sequel to the orginal hit from 2005 features the voice talents of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer, Andy Richter, Bernie Mac, Sherri Shepherd and Alec Baldwin.

The plot synopsis: “All the loveable characters are back – Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo, King Julien, Maurice and the penguins – in “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.” Left marooned on the distant shores of Madagascar, the New Yorkers have hatched a plan so crazy it just might work. With military precision, the penguins have repaired an old crashed plane – sort of. Once aloft, this unlikely crew stays airborne just enough to make it to the wildest place of all – the vast plains of Africa itself – where our zoo-raised crew encounter species of their own kind for the very first time.”

In an article from Reuters, “Director Andrew Stanton, who won an Academy Award for Pixar’s most lucrative film, “Finding Nemo,” said he wanted to show a future in which people had lost track of what matters in life. …The film’s references to current hot-button issues — the environment, obesity and corporate greed — were a coincidence, Stanton said, because he conceived the premise in 1994 with the idea of reviving the science-fiction films he loved as a boy.”

Walt Disney’s cynical mock fairy tale won the box office last weekend, scoring $34.4 million, which was the second highest-grossing Thanksgiving debut on record behind Toy Story 2.

We have seen the future, and the future of animation is digital 3D – and throw in an IMAX just for good measure. After a weekend viewing at our local IMAX, and despite the fact we were forced to sit in the neck wrenching first row, all we can say is wow!

“Beowulf” won last weekends box office race, although with a budget of around a $150 million dollars, it’s opening debut of $27.5 million was not all that heroic. The animated action movie received mediocre reviews, but we feel the it really depended on whether viewers were watching the conventional presentation versus the 3D version. In fact, for IMAX theatres, it was a record in terms of percentage share of an opening weekend, accounting for 13 percent of the gross with less than two percent of the screens, and 40 percent of Beowulf’s total gross coming from both the IMAX and Real D digital 3D format screens.
