Bolt Opens in the Number Three Spot at the Box Office

The other new release this past weekend was Walt Disney’s non-Pixar animated family flick, “Bolt”, which might have suffered from “Twilight’s” strong opening, but is expected to pull some strong numbers over the extended holiday.

Opening in third spot with $26.2 million, but just slightly behind last weekend’s box office champ, “Quantum of Solace“, Bolt also launched with a record 982 3-D presentations which accounted for 39 percent of its total box office take.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa Tops Last Weekends Box Office

The holiday season got a great kick off, as Dreamworks “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” raked in a cool $63.1 million on approximately 7,100 screens last weekend, and ranking it among the ten biggest animated starts of all time. It also set a record for an IMAX animation debut, with a gross of $3.5 million at 129 venues.

The sequel to the orginal hit from 2005 features the voice talents of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer, Andy Richter, Bernie Mac, Sherri Shepherd and Alec Baldwin.

The plot synopsis: “All the loveable characters are back – Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo, King Julien, Maurice and the penguins – in “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.” Left marooned on the distant shores of Madagascar, the New Yorkers have hatched a plan so crazy it just might work. With military precision, the penguins have repaired an old crashed plane – sort of. Once aloft, this unlikely crew stays airborne just enough to make it to the wildest place of all – the vast plains of Africa itself – where our zoo-raised crew encounter species of their own kind for the very first time.”

The Seven Year Itch

The “Seven Year Itch” is often cited as one of the great comedies of its time and in 1955, the film version became the biggest US box office hit of that summer. Marilyn Monroe plays a blonde model and actress on a toothpaste commercial whose name is never revealed in the film – she is simply referred to as “The Girl”. The movie also contains one of Monroe’s most iconic images – the scene where her dress is blown up above her waist by a passing train underneath a subway grate she is standing on.

Monroe was truly a legend, whose accomplishments during her short life has made her one of those enduring pop culture icons.

We were trying to find the price that her famous “Seven Year Itch” dress fetched at auction. We did come across the auction result of another famous piece of her wardrobe – the evening dress she wore at the famous birthday tribute to President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962. The final price at the 1999 Christie’s auction was an astounding $1,150,000. We wonder where that dress is now?

During Profiles in History’s auction on July 30, 2004, Monroe’s signature red evening gown from the 1953 film “How to Marry a Millionaire” was sold for $48,875 while Monroe and Jane Russell’s matching sequin dance costumes with hats from the 1953 film “Gentleman Prefer Blondes” sold for $40,250.

Zack and Miri Make A Porno

Opening next week on October 31, 2008 is a new comedy from director Kevin Smith and starring a red hot Seth Rogen. Apparently, the movie title and the posters have created some controversy with the MPAA banning the original advance poster and a fight over the movies rating. Good enough to create a bit of buzz…

Oh, and we notice that Traci Lords is in the credits, who was controversial in her time as well. Lords first achieved notoriety for her underage appearances in pornographic films and Penthouse magazine.

The quick synopsis: “Zack and Miri are two lifelong friends who are deep in debt and enlist the help of their friends to make a porno movie for some quick cash. But as everybody starts “doing” everybody, Zack and Miri realize that they may have more feelings for each other than they previously thought.”

In an article from Reuters, “Director Andrew Stanton, who won an Academy Award for Pixar’s most lucrative film, “Finding Nemo,” said he wanted to show a future in which people had lost track of what matters in life. …The film’s references to current hot-button issues — the environment, obesity and corporate greed — were a coincidence, Stanton said, because he conceived the premise in 1994 with the idea of reviving the science-fiction films he loved as a boy.”
