Valkyrie Movie Poster

We just watched Tom Cruise doing an interview today promoting his latest movie, “Valkyrie”, and were wondering why he’s looking so thin – what’s the poop? Observation only, that has nothing to do with the movie…

Tom Cruise stars in the suspense film, “Valkyrie,” based on the true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise) and the daring and ingenious plot to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known.

The movie opened Christmas Day, and was directed by Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men).

So what are the reviews?
RottenTomatoes: 63% Fresh

Over on Yahoo Movies, the users give it a B, while the average of the critics was a B-. And Roger Ebert gave it three stars, saying it is “a meticulous thriller based on a large-scale conspiracy within the German army to assassinate Hitler.”

A lot tougher over at the LA Times:
Valkyrie’ to ‘Heil Razzies’? Looks like the Razzies are confident in their prophesy that “Valkyrie” will land in their next derby, which commences on Jan. 21 when noms are unveiled. Last year the Razzie ceremony ended with big photos on stage of films they expect to see next year. Tom Cruise in that eyepatch got the biggest play – and the most howls, guffaws and applause from the audience.”

Director: Bryan Singer
Screenwriters: Nathan Alexander, Christopher McQuarrie
Cast: Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Carice van Houten, Thomas Kretschmann, Eddie Izzard, Christian Berkel, Terence Stamp

Jeremy Piven of Entourage

Entourage TV Poster

Jeremy Piven leaves Broadway Show

Apparently, Piven of the hit HBO series “Entourage” has left the cast of the Broadway show, “Speed-the-Plow”,
because of what his doctor has cited as being “the highest mercury level he has ever seen”, supposedly caused
by the actors excessive love of sushi.

There are doubters though, that feel that Piven is playing hooky and that something feels “fishy” about the story.
They cite his behaviour during previous performances, and his habit of showing up just moments before curtain call.

Playwright David Mamet made the smart crack that Piven was
“leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer.”

Piven has been temporarily replaced in the show by
Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz.

The Air I Breathe” is an ambitious and absorbing drama comprised of four stories from debuting director/writer Jieho Lee and is based on a Chinese proverb that breaks life down into four key emotions – Happiness, Sorrow, Pleasure, and Love. A powerful ensemble cast drive the stories, and each vignette is built around a character who embodies one of these key emotions.

Iron Man Movie Poster

Iron Man

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, Samuel L. Jackson, Leslie Bibb, Clark Gregg, Stan Lee
Directed by: Jon Favreau
Official Website: IronManmovie.com

Marvel Comic’s successful stable of licensed characters carries on with the introduction of the venerable Tony Stark and Iron Man (another personal favourite from our comic reading days in the 60’s).

The movie tells the story of Tony Stark (played with the sarcastic wit of Robert Downey Jr.), a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to America, Tony must come to terms with his past. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man.

Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow also star. Even though it’s not coming out until Spring of 2008, thanks to a killer trailer, the Iron Man movie poster is already a hot seller.

Jon Favreau also directed “Zathura (2005)”, “Elf (2003)”, “Made (2001)”, and is also a writer, producer and actor. We didn’t recognize the name until we looked him up on the IMDB, and ashamedly actually recognized him from “Friends“, where he played a rich boyfriend of Monica’s (Pete) for a few episodes.

Ridley Scott’sAmerican Gangster” was the top box office draw last weekend, but it looks like “Bee Movie” will grab the top spot this week, given the lack of any serious contenders.

The new releases, Vince Vaughn’sFred Claus” and the star power behind “Lions for Lambs” (Robert Redford, Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep) weren’t enough to shift the standings and were in fact a little disappointing.
