The Golden Compass

Apparently, “The Golden Compass” is stirring up some controversy with both fans of the original books by Philip Pullman, and the Catholic Church.

According to a news story on stuff.co.nz:

“The Golden Compass, a $US180 million picture released on December 7, is caught between a US Catholic group that has called for a boycott of what it sees as an attack on religion and Pullman purists who do not want the original watered down.

The US-based Catholic League urged Christians not to see the movie, fearing even a diluted version of the book might draw people to read the bestselling His Dark Materials trilogy.”

Walt Disney’s cynical mock fairy tale won the box office last weekend, scoring $34.4 million, which was the second highest-grossing Thanksgiving debut on record behind Toy Story 2.

Marvel Comic’s successful stable of licensed characters carries on with the introduction of the venerable Tony Stark and Iron Man (another personal favourite from our comic reading days in the 60′s).

The movie tells the story of Tony Stark (played with the sarcastic wit of Robert Downey Jr.), a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to America, Tony must come to terms with his past. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man.

Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow also star. Even though it’s not coming out until Spring of 2008, thanks to a killer trailer, the Iron Man movie poster is already a hot seller.

Jon Favreau also directed “Zathura (2005)”, “Elf (2003)”, “Made (2001)”, and is also a writer, producer and actor. We didn’t recognize the name until we looked him up on the IMDB, and ashamedly actually recognized him from “Friends“, where he played a rich boyfriend of Monica’s (Pete) for a few episodes.

We have seen the future, and the future of animation is digital 3D – and throw in an IMAX just for good measure. After a weekend viewing at our local IMAX, and despite the fact we were forced to sit in the neck wrenching first row, all we can say is wow!

“Beowulf” won last weekends box office race, although with a budget of around a $150 million dollars, it’s opening debut of $27.5 million was not all that heroic. The animated action movie received mediocre reviews, but we feel the it really depended on whether viewers were watching the conventional presentation versus the 3D version. In fact, for IMAX theatres, it was a record in terms of percentage share of an opening weekend, accounting for 13 percent of the gross with less than two percent of the screens, and 40 percent of Beowulf’s total gross coming from both the IMAX and Real D digital 3D format screens.

This creature-feature sports some impressive special effects as a result of a collaboration between effects houses, Weta Workshop (“King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings“) and The Orphanage (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” “Sin City“). As one user review quoted, “Best special effects and monster effects I’ve seen in years!”.

From South Korea and director Joon-ho Bong, it’s original title was “Gwoemul”, and the film generated some international buzz and was the talk of the 2006 Cannes International Film Festival. It gets a limited release on March 9, 2007 from distributor Magnolia Pictures.

The barebones plot outline: “A mutant monster emerges from Seoul’s Han River and focuses its attention on attacking people.” From what people are saying though, it looks like much more…
