Taking the number one spot this past weekend at the box office was the only new nationwide release, Michael Jackson’s music documentary “This Is It” – charting in at a decent, but not exceptional $21.3 million, second only in this genre to the opening of the Hannah Montana concert movie.

In second place, the hit supernatural horror flick “Paranormal Activity” added another $16.5 million to its total of $84.8 million, while the other major horror release, “Saw VI” looked like a franchise whose days are over, managing a meagre $5.6 million.

Star Trek XI Movie Poster

J.J. Abrams won the past weekend with the latest take on the venerable series, as Star Trek nailed the box office, pulling $75.2 million on approximately 7,400 screens at 3,849 sites.

BoxOfficeMoJo.comreports that “Star Trek’s total was the biggest-grossing weekend ever in IMAX history. The picture raked in $8.5 million at 138 IMAX venues, surpassing The Dark Knight’s previous benchmark of $6.3 million.”

Movie Box Office: March 6-8, 2009

The only new wide release “Watchmen”, the $150 million dollar adaptation of the DC Comics graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, set the pace this past weekend, punching into first spot in the top ten with just over $55 million at the box office. Directed by Zack Snyder of “300″ fame, the R-rated action flicked scored nearly ten percent of its receipts from IMAX showings, the second largest IMAX launch ever behind “The Dark Knight”. Other film adaptations of Moore novels include “V for Vendetta” and “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.”

Last weekend’s number one movie, “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” held up well, dropping into second place, while not surprisingly, “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience” had the sharpest tumble, dropping into ninth place from second last week.

On a weekend after New Year’s, and with no new wide releases, the box office standings pretty well stayed the same as last weekend. “Marley and Me” held on to the top spot, and in fact, the top eight positions remained the same.

With “The Spirit” dropping out of the top ten, “Doubt” actually gained a position, while “Slumdog Millionaire” was the only movie to actually post an increase in box office receipts.

With the year drawing to a close, the top ten lists are being released, and movies are no exception. Of little surprise is “The Dark Knight” leading the pack, as it almost became the biggest movie of all time, second only to “Titanic”.

Four of the top 10 were animated movies, and Paramount lead the studios with a piece of four of the top 10 as well.

It was a quiet, quiet weekend for Hollywood – and they were blaming the weather across the Northern states for their woes, but it was actually looking like disinterest on the part of moviegoers. Jim Carrey trumped Will Smith, as “Yes Man” pulled the number one spot with just over $18 million. In what could be the end of Smith’s streak of $100 million plus movies, the vaguely marketed “Seven Pounds” took second place with just shy of $15 million.

The other new release was the animated family adventure, “The Tale of Despereaux“, which scurried into third place with $10.1 million. The movie did feature some impressive voice talent with Matthew Broderick, Robbie Coltrane, Frances Conroy, Tony Hale, Ciaran Hinds, Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Kline, Frank Langella, Christopher Lloyd, William H. Macy, Stanley Tucci, Tracey Ullman, Emma Watson and Sigourney Weaver. It also managed to beat out the top two movies this week with a better Rotten Tomatoes rating of 52% (Seven Pounds got “pounded” with a 28% rating).

Bolt Opens in the Number Three Spot at the Box Office

The other new release this past weekend was Walt Disney’s non-Pixar animated family flick, “Bolt”, which might have suffered from “Twilight’s” strong opening, but is expected to pull some strong numbers over the extended holiday.

Opening in third spot with $26.2 million, but just slightly behind last weekend’s box office champ, “Quantum of Solace“, Bolt also launched with a record 982 3-D presentations which accounted for 39 percent of its total box office take.

Twilight Number One at the Box Office

Twilight Scores at the Box Office

The teenage girls turned out in full force this weekend, and propelled the big screen adaptation of the first of Stephenie Meyer’s popular vampire books to the top spot at the box office, with an estimated $70.5 million in ticket sales.

Playing one of the leads as Edward, has also established Robert Pattinson as a bonafide heart throb to that seething mass of female consumers, who know what they like and know what they want…

The movie also established a record for Catherine Hardwicke (“Thirteen“, “Lords of Dogtown” and “The Nativity Story“) as the biggest opening ever for a female director. The opening also was the fourth-biggest ever for the month of November.

With the success of this first film, the sequels are already in the works – the next 2 books in the series – 2006′s New Moon (2006) and last year’s Eclipse – will be shot back-to-back with director Catherine Hardwicke and stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson returning.

It looks like Daniel Craig and the “Quantum of Solace” have won the weekend with a debut that will probably be $70 to $71 million at the box office after the dust settles on Monday morning, setting a record for the biggest Bond movie ever, and eclipsing the previous record for the franchise which was the 2002 release of “Die Another Day” with $47.1 million and starred Pierce Brosnan.

Sony Pictures gambled with its controversial reinvention of the long running franchise, introducing a darker, grittier James Bond in the 2006 “Casino Royale” which featured the writing talents of Paul Haggis (“Crash“) , Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, and the numbers indicate that it has paid off. Folllowing a storyline that is closer to Ian Fleming’s original vision of a spy in a cold, cruel world, the latest incarnations are proving that there is still life with intelligent screenplays that don’t pander to the lowest common denominator.

The quick movie synopsis: “Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (Judi Dench) interrogate Mr White (Jesper Christensen) who reveals the organization which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined.”

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa Tops Last Weekends Box Office

The holiday season got a great kick off, as Dreamworks “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” raked in a cool $63.1 million on approximately 7,100 screens last weekend, and ranking it among the ten biggest animated starts of all time. It also set a record for an IMAX animation debut, with a gross of $3.5 million at 129 venues.

The sequel to the orginal hit from 2005 features the voice talents of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer, Andy Richter, Bernie Mac, Sherri Shepherd and Alec Baldwin.

The plot synopsis: “All the loveable characters are back – Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo, King Julien, Maurice and the penguins – in “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.” Left marooned on the distant shores of Madagascar, the New Yorkers have hatched a plan so crazy it just might work. With military precision, the penguins have repaired an old crashed plane – sort of. Once aloft, this unlikely crew stays airborne just enough to make it to the wildest place of all – the vast plains of Africa itself – where our zoo-raised crew encounter species of their own kind for the very first time.”

Box Office Predictions for Oct 31 – Nov 2, 2008

Two new movies (“Zack and Miri Make a Porno” and “The Haunting of Molly Hartley“) debuting this weekend are expected to make the box office top ten, while Clint Eastwood’s “Changeling” will expand into wide release and should make a splash as well. Industry watchers have indicated that Angelina Jolie’s performance in the movie could garner her Golden Globes and Oscar nominations.

The numbers from Friday, while not indicative of the final numbers for the weekend because of Halloween skueing the results were:

High School Musical 3: Senior Year Takes Box Office Gold

It’s only Sunday afternoon, but it looks like Disney’s “HSM 3” will easily win the weekend with a box office take of around $42 million, with industry watchers projecting a run that will take the musical to over $150 million in total receipts.

Second place will go to Lionsgate’s “Saw V” with a strong showing of what should be about $30 million.

Max Payne number one at the box office

“Max Payne” won the box office this past weekend, as Marky Mark (Mark Wahlberg) had his all-time seventh-best opening with this video game to film adaptation, despite less then stellar reviews and a 16 percent fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes (ouch!).

Weighing in with $16.7 million, Max Payne knocked off last weekend’s box office champ, “Beverly Hills Chihuahua“, which landed in second place. With an impressive per theater average of $6,617 and a total of just over $10.5 million, “The Secret Life of Bees” was a surprise hit in third place, while Oliver Stone’s portrait of George W. Bush’s legacy, “W” finished the weekend in fourth place with a close $10.5 million.

The only other new release to make the top ten was “Sex Drive“, which faltered out of the gate with just over $3.6 million.

The Dark Knight

It’s still early Sunday, but the box office estimates already have “The Dark Knight” pegged with over $155 million for it’s opening weekend, making it the biggest debut ever, and beating out the previous champ, “Spider-Man 3″ which opened with $151.1 million last year.

“The Dark Knight” also broke the new single and opening day records on Friday with $66.4 million.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

Well, tonight is when Pirates of the Caribbean 3 will begin to sail into box office history, as we are predicting the biggest opening weekend for a movie ever – but it will have to beat Spider-Man 3‘s $151 million, and it’s opening in less theatres. MovieTickets.com reports that its presales are outpacing both Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and the current box office opening weekend record-holder, Spider-Man 3.

The early reviews we are seeing are a real mixed bag – some critics are saying that the third Pirates is a long, convulted mess that just doesn’t deliver. I guess the moviegoers will be the judges as they cough up their cash.

It’s shaping up to be a good year for Disney, coming off of Shrek the Third‘s blockbuster debut as well. Has to have a positive effect on the stock price!

Spider-Man 3 opened in theatres yesterday on May 4, 2007, and Sony Pictures was reporting an opening day of $59 million, which if accurate, is a new opening day record, beating the $55.8 million set by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

If the movie continues this way over the weekend, it should also beat the all-time record opening weekend of $135.6M, also set by Pirates. Spider-Man 3 also set a record for the widest ever release, showing in 10,000 screens at 4,252 theaters.

Nicolas Cage and Marvel Comics Ghost Rider continue to dominate the top of the box office. The “hot” superhero CGI thriller remained in the number one spot in its second weekend with $20 million, and a total take of over $80 M so far. The Number 23 starring Jim Carrey took in $15 M in its opening weekend to grab second place, just ahead of Bridge to Terabithia with $13 M. The comedy based on a TV series Reno 911: Miami opened in fourth spot with just under $10 M, while last weekend’s other new wide release The Astronaut Farmer with Billy Bob Thornton flopped with just $4 M in ninth position.

Several new films are making their debuts in theatres this weekend: Wild Hogs (we’re betting a debut at number one) and Zodiac are expected to battle for the top spot, while Full of It and Black Snake Moan also have wide release openings.

Eddie Murphy weighed in with the large comedy, “Norbit“, pulling in the top spot at the box office. The other new release, “Hannibal Rising” didn’t fair as well, but managed to gain second place even though it lacked the pull of Anthony Hopkins and audiences don’t seem to react as well to prequels. “Night at the Museum” remained in the top five after 2 months with a total take of $232 million during that period.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan dominated the box office over the weekend, pulling in over $26 million dollars and setting a new record to become the highest grossing wide release opening ever for a movie playing at less than 1,100 theatres. Based on a character by Sacha Baron Cohen from his HBO series, “Da Ali G Show”, it seems to have benefited from some smart movie marketing – we’ll see how it fares next weekend when it expands to 2,200 to 2,500 theatres.

The Santa Clause 3 opened in second place with $20 million, with third place going to Flushed Away with $19.1 million.

It wasn’t a great opening weekend for The Grudge 2, but it did manage to nail down first place with $22 million – a far cry from the $39 million the horror remake of The Grudge made back in October 2004. However, overall box office receipts were up 27 percent over the same frame last year.

In second place, Martin Scorsese’s The Departed remained strong in its second weekend with $18.7 million, and even the modest take of the third place Robin William’s Man of the Year managed to gross more than 2005′s number one movie for the same opening weekend, The Fog.

Sony’s animated comedy Open Season with $11 million and New Line’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning with $7.7 million rounded out the top five.
