J.J. Abrams won the past weekend with the latest take on the venerable series, as Star Trek nailed the box office, pulling $75.2 million on approximately 7,400 screens at 3,849 sites.

BoxOfficeMoJo.comreports that “Star Trek’s total was the biggest-grossing weekend ever in IMAX history. The picture raked in $8.5 million at 138 IMAX venues, surpassing The Dark Knight’s previous benchmark of $6.3 million.”

Will Smith and “I am Legend” opens this weekend, and it’s looking like it should be the first blockbuster of the holiday season and one of the few movies to make an impact at the box office in what’s been a pretty lacklustre fall and winter season for Hollywood. Spider-Man 3 opened in theatres yesterday on May 4, 2007, and Sony Pictures was reporting an opening day of $59 million, which if accurate, is a new opening day record, beating the $55.8 million set by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

If the movie continues this way over the weekend, it should also beat the all-time record opening weekend of $135.6M, also set by Pirates. Spider-Man 3 also set a record for the widest ever release, showing in 10,000 screens at 4,252 theaters.
