J.J. Abrams won the past weekend with the latest take on the venerable series, as Star Trek nailed the box office, pulling $75.2 million on approximately 7,400 screens at 3,849 sites.

BoxOfficeMoJo.comreports that “Star Trek’s total was the biggest-grossing weekend ever in IMAX history. The picture raked in $8.5 million at 138 IMAX venues, surpassing The Dark Knight’s previous benchmark of $6.3 million.”

Spider-Man 3 opened in theatres yesterday on May 4, 2007, and Sony Pictures was reporting an opening day of $59 million, which if accurate, is a new opening day record, beating the $55.8 million set by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

If the movie continues this way over the weekend, it should also beat the all-time record opening weekend of $135.6M, also set by Pirates. Spider-Man 3 also set a record for the widest ever release, showing in 10,000 screens at 4,252 theaters.

This creature-feature sports some impressive special effects as a result of a collaboration between effects houses, Weta Workshop (“King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings“) and The Orphanage (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” “Sin City“). As one user review quoted, “Best special effects and monster effects I’ve seen in years!”.

From South Korea and director Joon-ho Bong, it’s original title was “Gwoemul”, and the film generated some international buzz and was the talk of the 2006 Cannes International Film Festival. It gets a limited release on March 9, 2007 from distributor Magnolia Pictures.

The barebones plot outline: “A mutant monster emerges from Seoul’s Han River and focuses its attention on attacking people.” From what people are saying though, it looks like much more…

Marvel Comics’ “Ghost Rider” comes to the big screen on February 16, 2007 from Columbia Pictures. It was always one of what I felt was one of the more stylish of the Marvel properties (and I love the Silver Surfer, too).

The movie synopsis: “In order to save his dying father, young stunt cyclist Johnny Blaze sells his soul to Mephistopheles and sadly parts from the pure-hearted Roxanne Simpson, the love of his life. Years later, Johnny’s path crosses again with Roxanne, now a gogetting reporter, and also with Mephistopheles, who offers to release Johnny’s soul if Johnny becomes the fabled, fiery Ghost Rider, a supernatural agent of vengeance and justice.”

We’re hooked on this new show which premiered this fall, and are just waiting for it to come on again this evening. “Save the cheerleader – Save the world” is the catch phrase that makes Monday television worth viewing.

One of our favorite characters is Hiro Nakamura (played by Masi Oka) who is an office worker from Tokyo with the ability to manipulate the space-time continuum.

UPDATE Oct 2008: We’re now into season 3, and the wildly successful Tim Kring series is still going strong. This season adds the twist of who are the heroes and who are the villains.

These ones are hot. Due out next year, probably in March of 2007, TMNT could be a major blockbuster. This all CGI version will be distributed by Warner Brothers and The Weinstein Company. Apparently, “the PG-rated movie will derive its tone from the original comic-book series and will be grittier than the previous live action pictures.”

The release date is almost a year away, but the hype machine has kicked in. Set for July 4, 2007 from DreamWorks Pictures (Paramount), Michael Bay’s big budget special effects movie will bring a new twist to the popular franchise that has been going strong for over 22 years.

The Transformers synopsis: “The Earth is caught in the middle of an intergalactic war between two races of robots, the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons, which are able to change into a variety of objects, including cars, trucks, planes and other technological creations.”

Michael Bay’s director credits include:
The Island (2005), Bad Boys II (2003), Pearl Harbor (2001), Armageddon (1998), The Rock (1996), and Bad Boys (1995).
