Fox kicks off season 8 of “American Idol” tonight with a two-hour audition episode, and with the addition of a new judge, things should be as entertaining as ever. The new kid on the block is Kara DioGuardi, who will be appearing with stalwarts Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson. DioGuardi, a a pop songwriter, producer and singer says she’ll continue to keep her “day job.”

The season will also mark the return of the “wildcard”, first seen in Season 3, The confusing explanation is, “After whittling the count down to 36 semi-finalists, there will be three weeks where 12 singers perform, with audience votes determining the top male, female and a third contender who will move on to the Top 12. In a fourth week, the next highest vote-getter from each of the three rounds will perform again, along with up to 10 other singers the judges think deserve another go. The three singers who receive the most votes will win the wild card, and round out the Top 12.” So there you go…

The show is still widely popular, even though last season’s viewership was down to an average of 28.1 million American viewers compared to 30.8 million in 2006.

Meanwhile, FremantleMedia, which owns the country’s most-watched TV show, is suing a strip club owner in Austin, Texas for running a weekly “Stripper Idol” contest. With nationwide attention and growing popularity, the Palazio Men’s Club managers say they have no intention ending the Thursday night strip-off, and say the contest bears no resemblance to the TV show.

Jeremy Piven leaves Broadway Show

Apparently, Piven of the hit HBO series “Entourage” has left the cast of the Broadway show, “Speed-the-Plow”,
because of what his doctor has cited as being “the highest mercury level he has ever seen”, supposedly caused
by the actors excessive love of sushi.

There are doubters though, that feel that Piven is playing hooky and that something feels “fishy” about the story.
They cite his behaviour during previous performances, and his habit of showing up just moments before curtain call.

Playwright David Mamet made the smart crack that Piven was
“leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer.”

Piven has been temporarily replaced in the show by
Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz.

Mena Suvari as Sandy Murphy

Mena Suvari stars in the TV movie “Sex and Lies in Sin City: The Ted Binion Scandal” which is based on the true story of about the death of wealthy Las Vegas casino heir Ted Binion (played by Matthew Modine) at the hands of his lover and her con-artist boyfriend. The Lifetime movie premiered this week.

As there were several lawsuits about the trials pending at the time of the filming, Suvari had to be careful about how she delivered every line of dialogue.

Suvari’s credits include “American Beauty“, “American Pie“, “The Garden of Eden”, “Day of the Dead” and TV roles in “Six Feet Under,” “ER” and “Boy Meets World.”

High School Musical 2

Premiering on the Disney Channel on Friday, August 17th, 2007 is the return of the hugely popular “High School Musical 2“, which features the return of all the main characters.

To earn some summer cash, Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) take jobs as a lifeguard and waitress at Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and Ryan Evans’ Lucas Grabeel) grandparents’ country club. Along with friends Taylor McKessie () and Chad Danforth (Corbin Bleu), they organize a talent show against a competing country club.

We’re hooked on this new show which premiered this fall, and are just waiting for it to come on again this evening. “Save the cheerleader – Save the world” is the catch phrase that makes Monday television worth viewing.

One of our favorite characters is Hiro Nakamura (played by Masi Oka) who is an office worker from Tokyo with the ability to manipulate the space-time continuum.

UPDATE Oct 2008: We’re now into season 3, and the wildly successful Tim Kring series is still going strong. This season adds the twist of who are the heroes and who are the villains.

Ah, another TV show to big screen translation. Although the casting for the starring roles looks good, and Michael Mann is the director – could be worth the time.
