Valkyrie Movie Poster

We just watched Tom Cruise doing an interview today promoting his latest movie, “Valkyrie”, and were wondering why he’s looking so thin – what’s the poop? Observation only, that has nothing to do with the movie…

Tom Cruise stars in the suspense film, “Valkyrie,” based on the true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise) and the daring and ingenious plot to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known.

The movie opened Christmas Day, and was directed by Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men).

So what are the reviews?
RottenTomatoes: 63% Fresh

Over on Yahoo Movies, the users give it a B, while the average of the critics was a B-. And Roger Ebert gave it three stars, saying it is “a meticulous thriller based on a large-scale conspiracy within the German army to assassinate Hitler.”

A lot tougher over at the LA Times:
Valkyrie’ to ‘Heil Razzies’? Looks like the Razzies are confident in their prophesy that “Valkyrie” will land in their next derby, which commences on Jan. 21 when noms are unveiled. Last year the Razzie ceremony ended with big photos on stage of films they expect to see next year. Tom Cruise in that eyepatch got the biggest play – and the most howls, guffaws and applause from the audience.”

Director: Bryan Singer
Screenwriters: Nathan Alexander, Christopher McQuarrie
Cast: Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Carice van Houten, Thomas Kretschmann, Eddie Izzard, Christian Berkel, Terence Stamp

Days of Glory

Cast: Jamel Debbouze, Samy Naceri, Sami Bouajila, Roschdy Zem, Bernard Blancan, Matthieu Simonet
Director: Rachid Bouchareb

Another film that caused a stir at the 2006 Cannes Film festival where it was the winner of the best ensemble cast, “Days of Glory (Indigenes)” had a limited release on February 16, 2007 from The Weinstein Company.

Indigenes is a true story of some of World War II’s forgotten heroes. It was 1943 and four young North Africans had never stepped foot on French soil. But because France was at war, Said, Abdelkader, Messaoud and Yassir enlisted in the French Army, along with 130,000 other “indigenous soldiers,” to liberate the “fatherland” from the Nazi enemy. These heroes that history forgot won battles in Italy, Provence and the Vosges before finding themselves alone to defend an Alsatian village against a German battalion.

The film is a France / Morocco / Algeria / Belgium production and is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year.

Letters from Iwo Jima Movie Poster

Letters from Iwo Jima

Cast: Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya, Shido Nakamura, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Ryo Kase
Directed by: Clint Eastwood
Official Website: IwoJimathemovie.com

“Letters from Iwo Jima” is the companion piece to Clint Eastwood’s “Flags of Our Fathers“. The two movies were shot back to back, and were released in sequence. Eastwood felt that showing only “Flags of our Fathers” would be telling only half of the story and he seeks to reveal that the battle of Iwo Jima – and, by implication, the war in the Pacific–was a clash not only of arms but of cultures.

“Letters” has gained some strong buzz, and is cited as being one of the top movies of 2006 by critics.

“Letters from Iwo Jima” had a limited release on December 20, 2006, with wider release dates set for January 12 and 19, 2007.

Flags of our Fathers Movie Poster

Flags of our Fathers

This World War II drama has a stellar pedigree, with Clint Eastwood directing, produced by Eastwood and Steven Spielberg (“Saving Private Ryan,” “Schindler’s List”), and a screenplay by Paul Haggis (“Crash”).

“Flags of Our Fathers” is based on the bestselling book by James Bradley with Ron Powers, which chronicled the battle of Iwo Jima and the fates of the famous flag raisers (one of the most iconic images in history: five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi) and some of their fellow soldiers in Easy Company.

It opens October 20, 2006 from DreamWorks Pictures (Paramount).

Cast: Patrick Dollaghan, Jon Kellam, Andri Sigurosson, Adam Beach, Allison Appleby
Directed by: Clint Eastwood
