“A D’Angelico guitar went for $300 in the 1960s, in the early 80s for $3000, by the 1990s it was going for $30,000. But they haven’t appreciated as much the last few years. They range from $10,000 to $50,000. Archtop guitars, in general, are soft right now. Great classical guitars are a nice, steady, appreciating market–more mature and more international. A wonderful Hauser guitar recently sold at Christie’s for over $90,000, on an estimate of $40,000-$60,000. Really good classical guitars are a solid investment.
…A 1930s Martin D-28, a herringbone bluegrass guitar, cost a few thousand in the 1970s, and now they’re in the range of $40,000 for a clean one, depending on the condition and year. Now that the rosewood guitars are so expensive, that’s driving up the more economical prewar mahogany ones, like the Martin D-18. Those are probably running close to $15,000. And they will continue to appreciate.”
