DALLAS — She always knew she wouldn’t keep his stuff forever.

Long after she is gone, Maria Elena Holly wants people to remember her husband, rock ‘n’ roll icon Buddy Holly. …For 47 years, Maria held on to these trinkets, poignant reminders of the past.

Childhood photographs. Handwritten notes. A 1958 passport. The engraved wristwatch he was wearing when his small plane crashed near an Iowa farmhouse during a light snowstorm.

…So she decided to auction more than 100 remaining belongings. Old shirts, ties, cuff links. Early demo versions of That’ll be the Day, Peggy Sue and Maybe Baby. And some songs previously unheard by the public.

“This is not about Buddy Holly’s death,” says Doug Norwine, director of Heritage Auctioneers Galleries, which is running the auction. “He’s an icon. He changed music forever. This is about celebrating him.”
