“A unique collection of paintings by Edvard Munch, the angst-ridden Norwegian artist best known for his nightmarish Scream, goes on sale in London next week.
The works offer a panorama of the development of the artist now hailed alongside Vincent Van Gogh as the originator of Expressionism.
“There has been no group of Munchs like this on the market in living memory,” expert Simon Shaw said at a preview in London at auction house Sotheby’s, noting that the lots included two markedly different self-portraits dated 1904 and 1918.”
UPDATE: “Summer Day by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch fetched $US10.8 million at the London auction, a record for the artist and $US3 million more than the highest price paid previously for one of his works.”
