“SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, September 10, 2005 – Last week, a 20-foot swell from Hurricane Katrina slammed the beach on South Padre Island near the Port Mansfield Cut and tore a 30- to 40-foot rift of sand from the shoreline.
Gene Gore, a local surf instructor who was camping on the northern beach, noticed several wooden beams poking through the eroded shoreline in a regular formation of 36-inch intervals.”
