Who created the Original Kenner Blythe Doll?

The original Kenner Blythe doll was created in the early seventies by designer Allison Katzman at Marvin Glass and Associates. Blythe dolls were only sold for one year (1972) in the U.S., UK, Australia and Japan. Kenner released versions of the doll with four hair colors in the U.S. and twelve different outfits, but at that time they gained little popularity among children and production was ceased. Considered extremely rare, the dolls were also released in Japan in 1972 by Tomy with outfits and a box design that was completely different from the ones released in other countries. The dolls produced at this time have subsequently attracted a large following among collectors and prices for them can range in the thousands of dollars.

In the late 90's, Gina Garan kick started a revival of interest in Blythe dolls with her photography and books showcasing her collection of dolls. Today there is a large following for new Blythe dolls and fashion accessories, as well as the original Blythe dolls.
