“The surprising fortune of the third extraordinary rarity seen Tuesday at Sotheby’s betrayed a new characteristic of modern culture. The Italian manuscript of Virgil’s complete works, dated 1459, was executed in Pesaro. Sotheby’s experts, Camilla Previt and her colleague de Hamel, see it as ‘probably the finest Renaissance manuscript of any classical text in private hands.

…the manuscript went to a telephone bidder who won the battle to the tune of 1.69 million pounds.'”
