Action Comics #1 Auction

Action Comics 1The most sought after comic book off all time is up for auction on eBay this week – Action Comics #1. Reportedly, this is the finest copy known to exist, out of an estimated 30 unrestored copies.

A CGC grade of 9.0 puts it on par with a copy that was previously owned by Nicolas Cage, with the difference being that this copy has perfect white pages, compared to Cage’s copy which had cream to off white pages. That Action Comics #1 sold for a record $2.1 million dollars at auction three years ago in 2011.

The book was originally purchased off the newstand in 1938 and then was stored in what is described as “near ideal” conditions for almost 40 years in a cedar chest in West Virginia, at which point it was purchased by a dealer during an estate sale. The current owner (and fourth), Darren Adams of Pristine Comics in Washington has kept the book stored in a climate controlled vault for the past several years.

As of this writing, the bids on the book are currently sitting at US $1,750,200.00, but it is easily expected that it will surpass 3 million dollars. Bidding ends on August 24, 2014, so if you have a few million in loose change in your pockets, check out the action here.

We will update this post once the final amount is known.

Stay tuned!

August 20, 2014 UPDATE: With four days to go, the current “action” on Action #1 is sitting at US $2,000,100.00 with 28 bids.

August 24, 2014 UPDATE: With less than 3 hours to go, the Holy Grail is inching up – it’s currently at US $2,350,293.80 with 41 bids. It will be interesting to see how the bids roll in the last few hours, as it’s still shy of the $3,000,000 that Darren Adams was reportedly offered….

August 25, 2014 UPDATE: The auction ended at US $3,207,852.00 with 48 bids, breaking the record for the most expensive comic book sold ever. The buyer is reportedly comicconnet.com, an online comic book auctioneer.
