“LONDON (AFP) – A Francis Bacon painting not seen in public since 1963 went on show at Christie’s auction house in London, which hopes the picture will smash the record price for a Bacon work.
“Study for Portrait II” (1956) is expected to fetch up to 12 million pounds (about $23.3 million U.S.) when it goes on sale on February 8.
Christie’s said the painting, a papal portrait, was among the greatest Bacon works ever to go under the hammer.”
