“NEW YORK (Reuters) – Live auctions are spilling over into the Internet, turning a formerly stodgy pastime into a hip activity as ever-younger investors seek assets they can enjoy instead of just browse on brokerage statements.
These buyers, unseen in auction rooms, are helping to boost closing prices to astonishing levels.
One vintage Mickey Mouse toy, made from tin, sold for over $10,000 — way above its $400 to $600 estimate — at a sale by Randy Inman Auctions Inc. in April, in fierce bidding generated by a live broadcast on eBay.”
