‘Orphan’ cars coming back as collectibles
Auto researcher and appraiser Kelley Blue Book named its list of the Top 10 “orphans” this week to mark the half-century anniversary of the release of the Edsel by the Ford Motor Co. on Sept. 4, 1957. The car lasted two years.
…The Edsel originally sold for $2,500-$3,800, but “some models have traded in collector circles for well above the $100,000 mark,” said Robyn Eckard, spokeswoman for kbb.com.
There are other such orphans. The 1948 Tucker Torpedo Sedan, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $2,450 that year, has had the most meteoric rise to a current value of $250,000-$450,000.”
