A Record $3.875 Million Sale:
The painting by Tom Jung was offered in the recent Heritage Auction Hollywood & Entertainment Signature Auction that was held on December 9-10, 2025. It set a record for most valuable Star Wars collectible and piece of movie poster art sold at auction, surpassing the sale of Darth Vader’s lightsaber, which sold for $3.6 million at Propstore, and Bob Peak’s Apocalypse Now art that Heritage sold for $687,500.
Heritage’s Director of Consignments, Pop Culture & Historical Charles Epting said, “This isn’t just a milestone for Star Wars. It’s a landmark moment for the entire field of pop culture collectibles and artwork.”
Tom Jung is known for his influential artwork for a wide array of films, including notables such as:
- Doctor Zhivago (1965)
- Gone With the Wind (1967 re-release)
- The Omen (1976)
- The Lord of the Rings (1978)
- The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (poster concepts/re-release art)
- Raiders of the Lost Ark
- Scarface
- Once Upon a Time in America
We looked at the sales data for Star Wars movie posters in eBay’s category of 1970-70 original movie posters and it shows there were 428 sales in the past two years with an average sale price of $259.07. Top prices were:
