Warehouse of leftover stuff entices bidders at ‘U’ auction

“Looking for a way to fill a summer Saturday, George and Carol Dyrdahl of Detroit Lakes, Minn., headed for the University of Minnesota’s Reuse Auction.
‘We’re in the mood for weird stuff,’ said Carol Dyrdahl. And they found it.
…The Herman Miller chair — a simple, plastic chair with chrome legs, a classic from the 1960s — is hot stuff, according to O’Keefe. The chairs are highly collectible, especially in Japan. Antique dealers are calling about them all the time, he said.
On eBay, the black vinyl version probably would go for $75 to $100, O’Keefe said, adding that it would be much less at his auction. It’s just too complicated legally to sell items from a land-grant university like the University of Minnesota on eBay, he said. So the ‘U’ holds its own auctions and rakes in thousands of dollars each time, he said, while giving folks good deals and keeping usable items out of landfills.”
