From the Bangkok Post comes the following story. The main focus is on teddy bear collecting, but I find the parts about pen collecting the most interesting:

“But among all of the products offered on Mr Korbtham’s web site, old pens seem to be the most saleable items, netting at least a 600% profit for each transaction.

He said that pens were more popular collectibles compared with other items, especially among academics and business executives, adding the prices tend to appreciate in a shorter time span of around five to 10 years. Fountain pens tend to be worth more that ballpoint pens.

…Unlike Teddy bear enthusiasts, collectors of old pens do not concentrate solely on the brand. The well-known names among collectors include Montblanc, Pelikan, Lamy, Visconti, Montegrappa, Cartier, Pilot, Platinum and Sailor.”
