“Hubcap collecting seems to have begun in the 1930’s, with – you guessed it – the invention of the hubcap. Or more correctly, the steel wheel, which had metal covers that protected the lug nuts and grease cap on the wheel hub.

Hubcap-stealing potholes, not to mention other road hazards, started the endless process of losing, looking for and retrieving wheel covers, followed by the need to seek and buy replacements. For some, hubcap collecting became an avocation. For others, it became more than that.”
