“The 1943 penny? A few 1943 pennies were made of copper instead of zinc-coated steel. (The traditional coin material, copper, was reserved for the war effort.) These all-copper pennies are valuable (one was auctioned off in 1996 for more than $82,000). The counterfeits are copper-coated 1943 steel pennies. Think you have a genuine one? The first test is a magnet. Steel pennies stick to a magnet. Pass the magnet test? Time for an expert appraisal”
