“LOS ANGELES, Nov. 2 (Xinhuanet) — A California man has become the owner of the world’s most valuable and famous set of rare coins, which he purchased for a record 8.5 million US dollars, according to a local media report Wednesday.
The coins, originally given in 1836 as a diplomatic gift on behalf of the then US President Andrew Jackson to the King of Siam– now Thailand — was purchased Tuesday by Steven L. Contursi, president of Rare Coin Wholesalers, the Los Angeles-based City News Service reported.
The seller was described as a US West Coast business executive who paid more than 4 million dollars four years ago for the 10 19th Century copper, silver and gold coins, which have a face value of less than 19 dollars.”
